In December, I will be retiring, after almost 20 years as the CEO of NIH Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU). Although I started planning for this decision nearly two years ago, it is hard to believe that I will no longer be representing the wonderful members of NIHFCU in a few short months. When I was hired in June of 1989, the nation was in the clean-up phase of the savings and loan mortgage crisis, and beginning an era of unprecedented prosperity. At that time, NIHFCU was just emerging from a difficult financial period, and was understaffed and undercapitalized, with an asset base of just under $90 million and about 22,000 members. Through the years, with a committed Board of Directors, dedicated staff, and the support of our membership, NIHFCU has grown and prospered into the thriving institution it is today—$400 million in assets and over 40,000 members. Your Board of Directors has created a Search Committee, who together with the services of a well-known recruiting firm, will find the very best candidate for the next President and CEO of the Credit Union. Your next CEO will be prepared to take on the challenges of running a multi-million dollar financial services organization through a time of unprecedented change and will need the support of our members, just as I needed your support over the past 20 years. I am confident that your new CEO, along with the dedicated Board and Staff of NIHFCU, will be up for the challenge, with your help and continued participation. Thank you for the honor of being your CEO. I can’t imagine having another career that has been so gratifying and inspiring. Not many careers allow you to make a living and change so many lives for the better at the same time. Through the years, NIHFCU has been able to help thousands of members attain a better quality of life simply by being there when needed.
