Recycle for Habitat
It takes many dollars to build a home. Don’t forget you can help with Habitat’s fundraiser efforts by donating used toner cartridges, printer cartridges, cell phones and laptops. This is a year round project from which our local Habitat can reap funds from the donated items. There are collection boxes where the donated items can be left at the Portsmouth Public Library and its branch offices, and at the RSVP office. If you would like to make donations or get a box for donations in your place of business or church, please contact Rita Haider (rita_haider1@hotmail.com) and she will either arrange to get you a collection box or get your recyclables picked up. Check local newspapers for news on the upcoming groundbreaking for the next Habitat home to be built in South Webster.
GREEN TIPS
•
Decorate for fall with natural items rather than buying new ones. Use leaves, branches and fall crops like pumpkins, gourds and fodder shock to decorate. Clean and store summer equipment before it becomes damaged in the snow and cold. Keeping equipment in better shape helps it to last longer, which will keep it out of the landfill. BE AN INFORMED VOTER
In just a short 6 weeks it will be time for us to do our civic duty and vote. Tuesday, November 4th will be here before we know it. There are very important issues on the ballot again this year. Our presidential race, congressional race, local commissioner’s race, city center & justice center issues to name just a few. I think that we are all in agreement that we want our lives to improve in all areas. We always do. But, we have all grown very lax in learning first-hand and taking what others tell us as gospel. I encourage everyone to give up a little bit of your time and energy to check them out on your own. If you have access to a computer you can check things out for yourself on the internet. Some websites you might want to look at are: League of Women Voters: www.lwvsciotoohio.org for info or for a schedule of meetings call Sandra Reiser 858-4302: City and Justice Centers: www.progressportsmouth.org for info or to schedule a presentation call Ann Sydnor 353-8337. Presidential race websites: http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues and http://www.barackobama.com/issues/ and or listen to the debates, or even better if we have more chances-see them in person! A great opportunity for that is The League of Women Voter’s Meet the Candidates Night on Monday, October 27th at 7 p.m. at the Welcome Center. Some dates for the upcoming debates nationally are: Thursday, Oct. 2nd Vice-Presidential debate in St. Louis; Tuesday, Oct. 7th Presidential debate in Nashville, TN and also on Wed. Oct. 15th another Presidential debate in Hempstead, NY. Please watch for local times and channels. We live in the greatest country in the world and we need to exercise our rights and vote to retain our values and quality of life. But we need to do it on our own. We need more than 25% of our registered voters voting on November 4th. Please, let Scioto County set a record and have the majority of our registered voters voting this yearregardless of the weather!!
