           History of Computers

5000 years ago, the first computer… the Abacus was
made. This device allowed users to make
computations using a system of sliding beads
arranged on a rack.

Then came Blaise Pascal with the Pascaline, a
machine that could computer fast, but only add.

Next was Colmar with his calculator and ultimately,
the first version of the modern computer as we know it
today by Charles Babbage then a simple analytical
Difference machine for computing logarithms (1822)
and analytical machine (1833).

     Likes & Dislikes of Computer

Things computer like:

Good ventilation
Clean environment
Stable, vibration free surface

Things computer don’t like:

Dust
Drinking and eating over the keyboard
Heat, Cold or Moisture
Don‟t place objects on top of monitors.
Don‟t place floppy disks near monitors.
Types Of Computers
 Analog Computers:
It utilizes continuous variables for the purpose of
mathematical computation.

 Hybrid computers:
It works on the principle of binary digit system of “0” and “1”
can give very precise results.
                            0=ON
                               &
                           1=OFF

 Super Computers:
It is somewhat similar to mainframe computers and is used in
economic forecasts and engineering designs.
    Types of Computers

Mini and Mainframe Computers:

Very powerful, used by large organisations such
an banks to control the entire business operation.
Very expensive!

Personal Computers:

Cheap and easy to use. Often used as stand-alone
computers or in a network. May be connected to
large mainframe computers within big companies.
      Hardware & Software

     Hardware refers to the physical
              components:
system unit, mouse, keyboard, monitor etc.

Software is the instructions that makes
the computer work. Software is held either
on your computers hard disk, CD-ROM,
DVD or on a diskette (floppy disk).
      Hardware Components
Input Devices - “To tell PC what to do”

A keyboard and mouse are the standard way to
interact with the computer. Other devices include
joysticks and game pads used primarily for
games.

Output Devices -- “To show you what the PC is doing”

The monitor (the screen) is how the computer
sends information back to you. A printer is also an
output device.

       Hardware Components

         CD-ROM Disks
Speed:
Much slower than hard disks.

Capacity:
Around 650 Mbytes and more. Normally
700 MB.
                DVD Drives

Speed:
Much faster than CD-ROM
drives but not as fast
as hard disks.

Capacity:
Up to 17 Gigabytes.

Cost:
Slightly higher than
CD-ROM drives.(8.5GB= ~200Rs.)

"How the processor stores and uses immediate data“

RAM - Random Access Memory
„Working' memory used by the computer. Computer will operate faster
if you install more RAM. Data and programs stored in RAM are volatile
(i.e. lost when switched off computer).
  Memory units and Calculations
Computers process data in one's or zero's. This 1 or 0 level of
storage is called a bit.

LAN
A LAN (Local Area Network) is a
system whereby
individual PCs are connected
together within a
company or organization
(Cybercafés) WAN
                                      A WAN (Wide Area
                                      Network) as the name
                                      implies
                                      allows you to connect to
                                      other computers over a
                                      wider area.
                                      (i.e. the whole world).
Computer Virus
                 Viruses are small programs that
                 hide themselves on your disks
                 (both diskettes and your hard
                 disk).

                 Unless you use virus detection
software, the first time that you
know that you have a virus is
                 when it activates.
                 Examples: Y2k, Trojan, Worm,
                 Trojan Horse, etc.
