Web 2.0 tools have become commonplace to today’s students. videoconferencing, podcasting, interactive Web sites, wikis, blogs, social networks, and more! The Media Stream What does it mean to stream media? To receive a multimedia file (audio or video) through a telecommunications network. You probably already do this– are you using UnitedStreaming? Watching E! News online? Do you Hulu? What is Podcasting? • A podcast is a free video or audio series — like a TV or radio show — that you download and play on your computer or iPod or MP3 player. How do I sign up? Podcatchers like iTunes or Juice are used to subscribe to serial podcasts, but you can find your own on your favorite Web site or blog and listen through your computer, your cell phone, or any MP3 player. Why podcast? • • • • Podcasting is cheap—or free. Podcasting can reach students anytime. It involves few privacy concerns. Podcasting is creative and fun; it can motivate students. • Podcasting can educate students about Copyright. Adapted from Fryer’s Classroom Audio Podcasting. What about copyright, again? In this era of accessible Web content, it is important that students understand copyright and plagiarism. Most wikis and podcasts fall under Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org) ; that means the content can be used by others as long as credit is given. Examples are Flickr and Magnatune. But I want to make my own podcast! Remember, podcasting is cheap—or free. Many Web sites offer tutorials on how to create and publish your own podcasts.
