Welcome to LIFE SCIENCE…the study of life. This course satifies the high school
graduation requirements. This class will further prepare students for BIOLOGY which
will be the next tier in the science sequence. In the course of the year, your student will
gain a better understanding of the California State Standards which include : Scientific
Process Skills, Ecology, Cell structure and function,Genetics, Evolution, and Human
Anatomy and Physiology. These standards can be accessed online at
www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/scmain.asp

Please read the following guidelines carefully so that you and your student are aware of
my classroom procedures and expectations.

GRADES: A point system will be used.             The overall semester grade will be
based on the accumulation of points from the following: Tests, Quizzes, H.W. logs , Lab
write-ups, Projects, and a comprehensive Final . A letter grade will be based on the
standard percentage scale A= 90-100% of total accumulated points B= 80-89% C= 70-
79% D=60-69% F=59% or lower

Aeries : Students are encouraged to keep track of their grades by using the    Aeries
grading program. (sis.ocsarts.net). You must have an Aeries account in order to access
this program. See me if you have questions regarding account set-up.

Tests/Quizzes
      Tests will always be announced and are usually given at the end of a chapter or a
       select group of chapters.
      Quizzes may or may not be announced
Homework
       Students should expect homework nightly and occasionally over the weekend. All
        homework assignments will be logged in a homework log . H.W. log will be turned
        in at the end of a chapter for a grade.
       Sharepoint : Students are expected to check sharepoint daily for
        assignments , handouts, and other relevant class information. This site can be
        accessed at sharepoint.ocsarts.net                 . More information will be given
        regarding sharepoint in the coming weeks. I will not be printing copies for you so
        please be responsible in being prepared . Students can access sharepoint from the
        IMMRC in the morning or during block 7 to print out assignments etc…
       Smart Board: The majority of classnotes will be presented by way of
        the Smartboard program. Please visit www.smarttech.com in order to
        download this software free of charge on to your personal computer
Late work/ Make-up work
       Make-up work will only be allowed for an excused absence. Students will be given
        an equal number of days to make up their work as the number of days they were
        absent.
       NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED Students will be issued 2 homework
        passes at the start of each semester to be used for unexpected emergencies. The
        homework pass entitles the student with an extra day in which to turn in homework
        without any penalties or loss of points. Homework passes are to be used for daily
        assignments only . They are not intended for projects, lab write-ups or other major
        assignments. ANY HOMEWORK PASS NOT USED IN THE COURSE OF THE
        SEMESTER CAN BE REDEEMED FOR EXTRA CREDIT.
       Block 7 tutorial : If you need assistance or you need to make up a test/lab etc…you
        will need to see me to make an appointment for block 7.
          If a student does not complete an assignment on time, they will be issued a
          mandatory tutorial summons. The students is then expected to show up to
          block 7 and complete the assignment while in tutorial in order to receive half
          credit . Failure to report to tutorial will result in a detention.

         * Students must use late passes first , before they are allowed to make up
         assignments for partial credit during tutorial.
Labs
        Labs are an integral part of this course. Every lab will be followed by a lab write-
         up. ( more on this later)

Academic Honesty
        Academic honesty is expected at all times . As per the OCHSA Honor code
         ( found in student palnner) students not adhering to the code will receive a zero
         and an administrative referral.
Materials Needed
      Student Planner
      Textbook ( class set is not available)
      Five star 3 subject notebook ( about 150-200 pages)
      At least 2 sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils
      Blue or black ink pens ( no other colors will be allowed )
      Glue stick
      Colored pencils
      Calculator ( does not need to be a graphic calculator)
      Small metric ruler (found in student planner)


Classroom expectations
      Appropriate behavior according to OCHSA classroom standards is expected at all
       times.
      Academic honesty will be followed
      No food or beverages other than water will be allowed
      I-pods, cell phones and other electronic devices will remain out of sight during
       instructional time
      Lab safety will be followed
      Students will be responsible for obtaining missed assignments through
       sharepoint,or a homework buddy
      Students are expected to bring all necessary materials( book, notebook,
       pencils/pen etc…) to class daily.
