LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL
FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY
A Laurel High School football player represents himself, his family, his team and coach,
his school, and his community as a participant in our athletic program. Since we feel
athletes should be good leaders, we expect that they will respond accordingly in the
classroom at school activities, and while participating in community activities. It is for
these reasons that we wish to inform you of the following specific rules and guidelines
governing a student’s participation in our athletic program.
1. On the day following a game, all athletes are expected to be in regular attendance
for the first period class. Unexcused tardiness or absence may result in the
athlete’s suspension from all or part of the next regularly scheduled game.
2. In the event that an athletic game is held on a day when school is not in session, the
athlete is expected to be in school on the last school day prior to the game.
3. In order for an athlete to participate in any game, the athlete must be in attendance
on the day of the game for at least one half of the class periods.
4. Any administrative action that results in a suspension of an athlete will result in the
following:
A. The athlete will not be allowed to participate in any practice or game during
the period of suspension.
B. If an athlete is suspended twice during the same sport season, the athlete will
automatically be released from the team.
5. Any athlete found to be drinking or under the influence of alcohol, in passion of our
under the influence of any controlled substance during the sport season in which
they are participating, shall be released immediately from the team. According to
Prince George’s County Board of Education policy, this action results in expulsion
from school.
6. Any athlete who violates school policy regarding smoking during the sports season
in which they are participating shall be released from the team immediately.
7. The student must complete the season through post-season play in order to be
eligible for awards and recognition.
8. Students are required to attend practices. The coach is will within his rights to
proportionately decrease playing time for missed practices.
9. The athlete is required to report to practice on time.
10. The athlete is to return all uniforms and equipment within the time prescribed by the
coach.
The rules governing school behavior and athletes as stated above have been
thoroughly explained to me. I understand that it is my responsibility as representation of
Laurel High School athletics to fully adhere to these rules and guidelines as stated.

SPARTAN FOOTBALL TEAM POLICY
The success of any organization is directly related to its code of ethics. The Code of
Ethics of the Spartan Football team states that every athlete and staff member is
responsible for both the integrity and the consequences of his own actions. The highest
standards of honesty, integrity, and fairness must be followed by each and every player
when engaging in any activity concerning Laurel High School, particularly in
relationships with students, faculty, the public, our competitors, and other team
members. We expect that no team or staff member will partake in any activity that is (or
gives the appearance of being) improper, illegal, immoral, or that could in any way harm
or embarrass Laurel High School and the Spartan Football Team.
GENERAL RULES
1. Never Be Late! It shows disrespect to the Coaches, the sport, and the team.
2. We will conduct ourselves as upright citizens, and abide by all rules set forth by
our school and administration.
3. Must have a minimum 2.0 GPA to participate. Must maintain a minimum GPA of
2.0 to continue to participate on the team.
4. NO tobacco or alcohol.
5. NO association with ANY illegal drugs of ANY kind whatsoever!
6. NO fighting or arguing on the field (coach or player). If another coach sends you
to Coach Moore for disciplinary purposes, I will deal with you at my discretion as
to what the best course of action to correct the inappropriate behavior will be.
SPARTAN FOOTBALL CORE VALUES
1. Coaches and players will always be HONEST with each other and all others they
may associate with.
2. Coaches and players WILL NEVER STEAL from one another or anybody else.
3. Coaches and players will always treat women with the utmost RESPECT.
ON THE FIELD GUIDLEINES
1. Be on time for every practice.
2. Hustle at all times. Concentrate and be intense in every drill.
3. We expect every senior and letterman to be a leader on the field. You are
expected to set the pace and to help younger members of the team.
4. When not in a drill, do not sit down or sit on your helmet.
5. Helmets must be on your head or in your hands at all times.
6. For your protection, you are required to wear ALL equipment issued to you.
7. NO PROFANITY! We expect you to act like a first class young man.
SPARTAN’EERS
Spartan’eers are used to help us remember our responsibilities to the entire
organization. Football is a game of detail, as we expect all to do their job to the best of
their abilities. It's the little things that allow the big things to happen. Spartan’eers calls
for each player on the team to participate in conditioning exercises which help reinforce
the fact that we are a team and individual actions effect all on and off of the football
field. Spartan’eers are given for the following offenses:
1. Late for practice or scheduled meetings. (No excuses-training room, equipment
room).
2. Player equipment left out (helmets, pads, shoes).
3. Messy locker room (tape, mud, soda cans, trash).
4. Cleats worn in the locker room.
5. Failure to adhere to game day dress code.
6. Breaking team policy.
7. Any other infractions will be handled by staff discretion
GIVING UP FOOTBALL
Any player giving up football and / or wishing to drop from the squad will have a meeting
with the head coach and turn in all equipment and material. Certainly, football is not for
all people. Therefore, it is the belief of the Spartan Football Staff that we will always
honor and certainly respect any player that drops from the squad after notifying the
head coach.
PARENT/COACH MEETINGS
Please call Coach Moore at (301) 437-8891 to schedule a meeting time. As always, I
would rather meet with you in person, but if we are unable to schedule a time, give me a
call.
ACADEMICS CHECKLIST
The Laurel High football staff believes that the academics course work is the primary
responsibility of each player. We have devised the following checklist for parent and
player to follow in an attempt to help form good study habits, maintain eligibility, and
excel academically.
ELIGIBILITY
The quarter prior to participation an athlete must have a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher with no
E’s. In order to be eligible, an athlete must also meet our school's eligibility policy.
STUDY TIPS
1. Do Your Assignments. Your teachers have carefully devised a learning
program. By not doing your assignments, or doing them hurriedly, you make the
time you spend in class less valuable.
2. Go To Class. You must attend all of your classes. By attending classes, you
show that you want to pass the course, and that will work in your favor if you
need some help with the difficult parts.
3. Participate In Class. Ask questions and express opinions. If you misunderstand
something during class, you'll get it wrong on the test. By speaking up, you give
your teacher a chance to correct anything you don't understand.
4. If You Have A Problem, Ask For Help Immediately. If you'd rather not talk in
class, see your teacher after class or set an appointment to see them. Ask them
to clear up anything that may have confused you in class. If you foresee
problems completing an assignment on time, ask for advice.
5. Study Every Night. Even when you have no assignment to do, review. Studies
have shown that reviewing material just before you sleep helps you remember it
the next day. If you spend time on your subjects each evening, you'll never have
to "cram" for a test.
6. Read. Most reading assignments prepare you for the next class session. If you
haven't done the reading, you probably won't have a clue to what the teacher is
talking about in your next class.
7. Find Out About Tutors. Tutors and peer counselors can help you find better
ways to do your work. A tutor may be able to show you a concept in a way that
your teacher can't. Since tutors work one-on-one, they often explain things to you
in your own terms.
