FVHS VALUES: RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS / AIMING TO ACHIEVE / POSITIVE PARTICIPATION
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As the school year of 2007 closes I cannot help but reflect on the many positive things that the students
of Forest View High School have achieved. They have represented our school and community of
Tokoroa with honour and distinction.
Our students have excelled in the classroom and several students have received recognition from the
international academic competitions that they participated in. I have been impressed by the quality of the
school reports of many of our junior students and I found myself regularly writing this comment: “I
challenge (student’s name) to strive for excellence in all of their academic responsibilities and to
resist the temptation of settling for average”. Forest View High School promotes excellence in all
aspects of achievement. Participation is indeed encouraged but the need to promote and celebrate
excellence in performance is an important part of Forest View High School.
We are looking forward to organising a special dinner next year to acknowledge our top academic
achievers of NCEA. I have met with Mrs Gibbons the Administration Dean to start planning for this
special evening and we are excited about the opportunity that this will provide the school outside Senior
Prizegiving to formally acknowledge and celebrate excellence in academic achievement. Over time we
anticipate that this event will become an important part of our school calendar that will significantly
contribute to promoting our RAP value of “Aiming to Achieve.” Below is a table acknowledging the
academic achievement of previous students from Forest View High School from the University of
Waikato and Canterbury University. The core driver of our Strategic Plan for (2008 – 2010) is to improve
student learning and achievement. I look forward to meeting with various school communities to discuss
this plan and to create alignment about what we perceive are our priorities for education. The
development of Maori and Pacifika action plans to improve student achievement will be an important part
of this process.
Recent graduations of previous Forest View High School students
Name University Degree
Debbie Campbell Waikato University Bachelor of Social Sciences
Mandy Rusk Waikato University Bachelor of Laws with Honours
Annette Paul Waikato University Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Social
Sciences
Monique Williams Waikato University Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies
Litia Downet Waikato University Certificate of University Preparation
Amy Blakemore University of Canterbury Bachelor of Engineering with First Class
Honours
Hilary Mathis University of Canterbury Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy
with Second Class Honours.
We are also planning on introducing a school based Junior Certificate of
Achievement next year to familiarise our students with NCEA terminology as well
as provide a tangible goal for all our junior students to strive to achieve. We will
operate a credit system for academic achievement as well as a credit system
that recognises other achievement areas such as culture, sports, arts, and
community service. We are still developing this certificate and will inform you
more of the details next year.
I am proud of our students who have
competed in national sports competitions,
and also regional competitions. Forest
View High School considers 2007 to be an
extremely successful year in sports. This
was perhaps best illustrated by our
representation at the South Waikato District
Sports Awards where we had nominations
in all of the applicable categories. Our
Junior Girls Soccer team were honoured by
being awarded the Team of the Year in the
South Waikato District.
2007 at Forest View High School will also be remembered for the quality of
student performance in the Performing Arts. The original drum performance at
the senior prize giving was well received. Our dance team who participated in
the nationals also performed with a high degree of professionalism. Love Potion
No 9 offered our students the opportunity to further develop their talents on the
stage. The quality of their performance was well received and appreciated by
their audience.
Te Piringitahi was one of fifteen schools that performed at the Tainui Secondary
School Kapa Haka Competitions. The positive way that they represented the
school was admirable and as the newly appointed principal of Forest View High
School I was very proud of their positive participation. I look forward to our
Polenetia Fa’atasi group getting back on the competitive circuit in 2008. Our
school musical talents were expressed at the regional Rock Quest and also at
the Pacifika Beats competition where our school band Urban Legend won the
competition. We also had numerous other students performing at various other
events.
Forest View High School was also well represented at the Braille collection that
was held earlier this term. It is important that our school is represented in
important community service events. I was also proud of the positive feedback
that I received from our Mayor regarding the positive participation of our students
in the youth Top Team event that was held in Putaruru on Wednesday
December 12. Our students emerged as the top school and made a very
positive impact on our Local Council.
Our school RAP Values focus on Respectful Relationships, Aiming to Achieve,
and Positive Participation. We are committed to providing a quality educational
experience for all of our students.
Staff Changes for 2008
I am proud of the quality of the staff that we have at Forest View High School. I
often refer to them as “the significant difference.” Their passion and
professionalism provide our students with the support and teaching that
prepares them to embrace the challenges of post secondary school life with
confidence and enthusiasm. My statements are not confined to the teachers only
but include everyone in our Forest View High School team who worked so
diligently to provide quality education.
This year we farewell the following teachers and thank them for their
contribution to Forest View High School: Ms Adrienne Petre (Social
Sciences), Mr John Brunton (Japanese), Mr Gareth Wright (Physical
Education), Mrs Lynette Douglas (Mathematics), Ms Parveen Kaur
(Mathematics) and Ms Pam Ryan (English).
We are also temporarily losing the teaching expertise for one year of Ms Kim
Buckley, Mr Lionel Matenga, Ms Latisha Kelly, and Ms Gabe Davis. We wish
them well in the various projects that they will be engaged in throughout 2008
and look forward to them rejoining our team in 2009.
In the table below are details of the new staff that are joining the school in
2008. We are excited about the experience and expertise that they will bring

DAILY POST YOUTH IN EXCELLENCE
Congratulations to Craig Pilott who is our latest
recipient of the Daily Post Youth in Excellence Award.
Craig has been a shining example of our School’s RAP
Values. Throughout his five years at Forest View,
Craig has stood out for his excellent relationships with
students and staff, his high level of academic
achievement, his involvement with cultural activities
and leadership of other students. Craig’s role in our
cultural activities has been enormous. His mastery of
the technical areas of Lighting and Sound and his
training of younger students has provided our School
with a very important resource.
Craigs academic success has been highlighted when he was named as Proxime
Accessit at this years Senior Prizegiving. Craig also got the Alleasing Award for

FVHS is a special school and it possesses a very unique culture that is ever
evolving.
I acknowledge our Board of Trustees who selflessly serve our School, and our
community. I consider it a privilege to work with a group of professional people
whose personal experience and passion to make a difference, enrich their
governance decision making processes.
I bid farewell to 2007 with few regrets and look forward to the opportunities of
further development that 2008 offers us. I wish everybody a Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year.

BOARD NEWS
In October, Board Chairman, Heather Rydon, and new Board members, Levi
Sikking and Fran Thompson-Stevens, attended the third and last evening in a
series of training sessions for Board members put on by the School Trustees
Association and facilitated by Stephen Blair at North School. Those members
who have attended these sessions have found them worthwhile, helping them to
more fully understand the duties, responsibilities, and finer points of the Boards’
role. The series will be repeated again next year and already some Board
members are intending to attend or re-attend.
These trainings are a recent and successful initiative by the STA and are not just
intended for new members but also staff and student reps, Principals and
experienced board members.
At our November meeting the Board heard a report from Doug Clark on the
Science Department. Doug acknowledged the good work being done by his staff
and students and showed some fine samples of students’ work. It was interesting
to hear him speak about the shortage of qualified science teachers not just at
Forest View High School but throughout the country and the challenges this
presents.
The Policy Committee met this week to review this month’s policies as well as
finalise some work that has been done over the past few months on the school’s
complaints policy and procedures. This work was given priority thanks to
feedback from parents throughout the year and will be made available in an early
newsletter to families next year.
As 2007 draws to a close the Board would like to thank the staff, students and
families of FVHS for the part each of you play in making this a great school
community to serve. We have enjoyed our year as a new Board and wish you all
a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and happy holidays. We look forward to
continuing to serve you next year.

JUNIOR EOTC
After months of planning, letter writing, phone calls and bookings the week
eventually arrived. Six groups of intrepid year 10 students and accompanying
teachers set off to various parts of the country to do a range of activities.
Wellington, Te Papa and the Avalon Studios were visited, Napier the Art Deco
town was investigated, and Taranaki experienced a small invasion,
by far the biggest single trip. The surf
was mastered in Raglan. The
Whanganui River was successfully
navigated and several fish were caught
in Tolaga Bay. By all accounts
everyone had a great time and huge
thanks must go to all the teachers in
charge who worked tirelessly to give the
students an unforgettable experience
and something for the Year 9s to aspire
to next year.
The Year 9 students had 3 days of day
trips that ranged from Clay Bird
Shooting to Waterskiing and Horse
riding with all sorts in between and all
reports indicate generally good
behaviour and lots of fun being had. I
would like to thank all the teachers who
shared the organising load with me. It
was much appreciated and especially a
big thank you to several volunteers who
gave their time and energy to give our
students an unforgettable waterskiing experience. They provided boats and
expertise without which the event could not have happened, so an enormous
thank you to Bruce and Sharon Luxford, Steve and Angela Toy and Andrew
Whitford.
The only negative to report is the increasing number of late withdrawals without
notification and this placed a huge strain on limited resources. The bookings are
made after consultation, and choices made by the students and
parents/guardians. Buses are hired, guides employed and courses booked.
While it is acceptable that incidents/accidents occur for a small number of
students, it is not acceptable to have an increasing number of people who make
a commitment and then withdraw at extremely short notice (even the night
before) for no real reason except they can’t be bothered. This attitude
jeopardises the whole set up and will need to be reviewed and overcome if these
trips are to be continued. I would appreciate parent/guardian feedback on how
these issues can be resolved. As Co-ordinator of these experiences I am
committed to giving our students as many EOTC experiences as possible and
look forward to many more happy, enjoyable and exciting trips.

TRIP TO JAPAN 2008
I am taking a small group of students to Japan next year, 15 September to 26
September. A preliminary itinerary would look like: Tokyo for 3-4 days going
sightseeing including Disneyland and being hosted by our sister school Misato
Kita High School, on to Kyoto for a few nights, and then Osaka. We would stay in
Youth Hostels some of the time and would be using Rail-passes during our stay,
including the bullet train. This would give our students the opportunity to
experience an amazing culture first hand. The cost is still to be decided but will be
around $4,000. We are hosting Misato Kita High School during the year (they will
come to Tokoroa for 10 days) and I will be looking for host families for their stay.
The students who come to Tokoroa could be the same ones who host our
students when we stay at Misato Kita High School. I will be having a meeting with
the people who are interested early next year to finalise the numbers etc. Any
parents who wish to travel with us will be welcome.

GET ACTIVE
On December 7th SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) released new
guidelines recommending that young people (5 – 18) need at least 60 minutes of
moderate to vigorous physical activity daily for improved physical and mental
health.
• Their guidelines state that children and young people should do 60
minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.
• Be active as many ways as possible eg play, dance, sport, recreation,
getting from place to place.
• Be active with friends, whanau, at home, school and in the community.
• Spend less than two hours a day (out of school) in front of TV, computers
and game consoles.
These guidelines are in addition to those recommended in 1996 for adults of 30
minutes a day, 5 days a week, which haven’t changed.
Come on get active over the holidays!

STUDENTS, PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS
It has come to Police attention that high school age students are purchasing
alcohol or having alcohol purchased for them from local liquor outlets in Tokoroa.
Please be aware of the consequences of not only purchasing alcohol or having
another person purchase alcohol for persons under 18 years old but also the
consequences of supplying minors with alcohol.
There can be very serious consequences for all persons concerned.
Alcohol can only be purchased by a person over 18 years. Photographic proof of
age is required. There are only three types of photograph ID that are accepted
when purchasing alcohol:

The law says that if you are under 18, without your parent or guardian you cannot;
• Buy alcohol or get an adult to buy you alcohol. There is a fine of $200
- $2000 for each of you.
The legal guardian is not another family member eg an aunt, uncle, older brother
or sister, older boyfriend or girlfriend, sports coach or anyone acting temporarily in
