Where is the AZ delegation on Health Care on HR 3200
and what can Arizonans do?
As of today, only Reps. Raúl Grijalva and Ed Pastor have signed on in support of the Public
Option. They signed the Health Care for America Now (HCAN) principles listed at the bottom of
this message. We all need to acknowledge their leadership with Letters-to-the-editor, send
them lots of thank you notes and laud them vigorously for standing firm for real reform.
We need to tell them our health care horror stories and let them know that they are our heroes for
standing up to the powerful insurance and medical lobbies.
Health Care for America Now (HCAN) members, including Labor, community groups, health care
orgs at the state and national level, have been lobbying Kirkpatrick, Mitchell and Giffords for
about eight months both in DC and in their districts with the aim of getting them to sign on
to the HCAN principles. None of the three have signed on. Giffords and Kirkpatrick have given
limp support to the Public Option and Mitchell's only action to date was his online survey.
Mitchell's constituents that haven't yet done so should complete the survey:
So what leverage do we have with these three?
When you look at Giffords', Mitchell's and Kirkpatrick's campaign contributions, you see that
unions are the heavy-weights on our good friends in Labor unions must push each of them, and
we need to continue asking the unions to do so.
All three have taken a bundle from insurance and medical industry interests, so there is potential
to move them by threatening to "out" them on these contributions and demand that they stand
with the people and not the big-money special interests. Not even Republicans like insurance
companies. Send them letters asking them which side of history they want to be on? On the side
of the voters or the medical profiteers? Ask them to publicly support a Strong Public Option. At
the very least they need to know that we know about these contributions and we are concerned
about the influence. This issue truly is a matter of life or death, and it demands that we all push
