    Compute This! Motivation
 Computers are pervasive in today‟s
 Most of next generation of discoveries will
be too complex for humans alone
 Must understand the capabilities and
    limitations of computers
 Compute This: Problem Solving using
          Competition Goals
 Evaluate students on basic technical
    computer skills
     Word Processing
 Using the World Wide Web

     Data Manipulation

     Data Presentation

 Evaluated by how well they use tools to
    solve problems
     Use of World Wide Web

 Recognize and Critically evaluate source of
 Proper citation of URLs
 Effective Searching - use of keywords
 Will NOT be restricting event to
domain, “entire internet” will be fair game
 NOT restricted to Oceanic & Atmospheric
    Science Theme
Data Manipulation - MS Excel

 Manual Import of Data
 Using formulas in MS Excel
     Converting units
     Summation & Multiplication
     Absolute Referencing

 For Division C
     Auto text import
     Using IF/Then Statements
 Other advanced Excel functions, (no VBA)
            Data Presentation

 Understand Basic Graph Types
     Bar, Line, Pie
 Scatter Plot (C Division only)

 Use Appropriate Graph for Data
 Fully Label the Graph
     Title, Axes, Legend
 Use appropriate colors
 Easy to read, careful of red/green
           Sharing Your Data

 Formatting Should be Neat
 Careful of HTML frames from websites
 Uniform Font
     Both Size and Style
 The test will be handed in via the web
    (File Transfer Protocol-FTP),
 this will not be an evaluation criterion
 Event assistants will help in this process

 Compute This! Web Space
 Links to other resources, sample questions and
     Exams from 2005, 2003
 Presentation available now, other materials after Jan

              How To Practice

 Download Practice Exercises from
    National Science Olympiad Website
 Download Practice Exams from our site:
 Be familiar with Word and Excel
 the test will be much harder if these programs
are not familiar to the student!
             How To Help Students
 Emphasize:
     Problem Solving
 How do I go about answering this question?
