    Compute This! Motivation
   Computers are pervasive in today‟s
    science
   Most of next generation of discoveries will
    be too complex for humans alone
   Must understand the capabilities and
    limitations of computers
   Compute This: Problem Solving using
    computers
          Competition Goals
   Evaluate students on basic technical
    computer skills
     Word Processing
     Using the World Wide Web

     Data Manipulation

     Data Presentation

   Evaluated by how well they use tools to
    solve problems
     Use of World Wide Web

   Recognize and Critically evaluate source of
    information
   Proper citation of URLs
   Effective Searching - use of keywords
   Will NOT be restricting event to noaa.gov
    domain, “entire internet” will be fair game
   NOT restricted to Oceanic & Atmospheric
    Science Theme
Data Manipulation - MS Excel

   Manual Import of Data
   Using formulas in MS Excel
     Converting units
     Summation & Multiplication
     Absolute Referencing

   For Division C
     Auto text import
     Using IF/Then Statements
     Other advanced Excel functions, (no VBA)
            Data Presentation

   Understand Basic Graph Types
     Bar, Line, Pie
     Scatter Plot (C Division only)

   Use Appropriate Graph for Data
   Fully Label the Graph
       Title, Axes, Legend
   Use appropriate colors
       Easy to read, careful of red/green
           Sharing Your Data

   Formatting Should be Neat
       Careful of HTML frames from websites
   Uniform Font
       Both Size and Style
   The test will be handed in via the web
    (File Transfer Protocol-FTP),
     this will not be an evaluation criterion
     Event assistants will help in this process

   Be familiar with Word and Excel
       the test will be much harder if these programs
        are not familiar to the student!
             How To Help Students
   Emphasize:
       Problem Solving
            How do I go about answering this question?
       Test-taking
            The exam will be longer than most teams can complete
       Using internet search tools
       Formatting/Presentation
       Familiarity with MS Excel & MS Word
   Saving files to a directory other than „My
    Documents‟
       Students will not be printing their tests
