Customizing is NOT a Dirty Word

To paraphrase somebody – Cataloging is
putting things away so that patrons can
 find them again
If this takes a little creativity, then so
 what!
At MBLWHOI, our patrons browse the
OPAC, not the stacks, so our creativity is
in the headings and authorities, not the
 classification numbers

                MLA - April 29, 2004
There are only two kinds of people
who believe themselves able to
read a MARC record without
referring to a stack of manuals:
a handful of our top catalogers,
and those on serious drugs.

         Series Name - 440
Technically the 440 (or the 490) is
supposed to be what’s on the piece.
What’s traced is either a 440 or an 830.
For some series which are important to
us, we put the authorized heading in the
 440, no matter what.
It’s better for searching and display if all
relevant items have it in the same tag.

           Finding Images
 We have a number of records which
have links to images in them
 Each of these records contains the
following note: Record contains link to
 digital image
This makes it easy to do a boolean search
to get relevant items, but only those with
 images
