How To Be Sick And Unhealthy: What Some Innocent Mice Taught Us About Aging By Mike Rutkowski If you want to be sick and unhealthy, there are some basic rules to follow. The good news is that you are almost certainly getting the basics right already. Above all else, there is just one key thing that you absolutely must be doing to make sure that your body is aging and breaking down as quickly as possible. And I can almost guarantee that you’re getting that right. To understand this as clearly as possible, let’s do a little thought experiment, just like our good friend Albert Einstein used to like to do. Let’s pretend that you have an unbelievable new sports car, a blood red Lamborgini or a Porshe or whatever car you’ve always wanted. You’ve got this fantastic new dream car, and you get so much enjoyment speeding around town and showing off. But, for some ungodly reason, instead of changing the oil at 3,000 miles, or 5,000 miles, or even 8,000 miles, you don’t. You simply put gas in it as you need it, and cruise around. 10,000, 20,000, now 30,000 miles. Absolutely NO maintenance, and still the original oil. Now, I know almost nothing about cars, but at some point, and maybe even before this, you and your car are going to pay a price for this. Your friend notices how horrible your car is running, and asks when you are going to finally change the oil. “Oh, I’m not going to ever change the oil. That’s too much bother. I’ll just take it in to a really good mechanic when I need to...” WHAT!!!! Sounds like you are being an idiot! For the relatively small inconvenience of changing your oil (or getting it changed) every so often, you’re trading that for MASSIVE problems later. But, it is cheaper and easier until that happens. I’m sure you see the comparison with maintaining your body, but I’m not even talking about the level that you are automatically thinking of: eating better, exercising a lot, figuring out what you can and can’t eat, what you should cut back on or eliminate, eating more fruits and vegetables, etc. We all “know” that we should be doing these things. But the simple fact of the matter is we don’t. The reason that we don’t is that the relatively small inconvenience and cost now seems bigger than the problems we’ll face later, since that is so far away. We always think we’ll start changing next week or next month or after Christmas, but that never really happens. Or, it happens for a few weeks, and then back to the old ways again. The one thing I’m talking about is actually the one MOST IMPORTANT thing we need to do for our bodies, the actual, scientific equivalent of “changing our oil”. It is our life blood, what studies have shown slows the aging process itself, and reduces our chance of heart disease and cancer by 33%. Interestingly, the #3 leading cause of death, after heart disease and cancer, is doctors.) What is that one magic thing we need to do to properly maintain our bodies? The thing that should form the foundation of any plan to maintain health?... Drum-roll please…… EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. You’ve probably heard about antioxidants before, but you may not realize how powerful they are, or conversely how dangerous oxidation is to your body. For those of you who don’t know, oxidation is basically when oxygen starts to interact with and breakdown a material. Over time, it is what causes iron to rust, bread to stale, and cut open apples to brown. It is also what interacts with otherwise normal, healthy cells within our bodies and causes damage that way. It strips out an electron from a normal cell, causing it to become charged. That cell then strips an electron from another healthy cell, and the process causes a chain reaction of damage. Scientists propose that this is one of the fundamental causes of aging. The reason they believe this goes back to a study done sometime during the 1980s at the University of Colorado, and some unfortunate mice…. What the researches did was to pump in 100% oxygen to an enclosure with otherwise healthy mice, who were the human equivalent of 18 years old at the time. After 2 days of this the researchers ran some tests to check on the relative age of the mice and their organs. And what they found was astounding. The mice were now the human equivalent of 60 years old! The aging process had been drastically sped up. To counter this, they ran the same experiment again, but this time fed the mice butt-loads of antioxidants. (Which come from plants and vegetables.) This time, after 2 days, they checked the relative ages again, with a second major surprise. NO CHANGE! The antioxidants had effectively countered the damaging effects of breathing pure oxygen. And then the race was ON. Did anti-oxidants effect humans in the same way? And an explosion in the study of antioxidants ensued. From almost no scientific, peer-reviewed papers on the topic from the 80’s, to over a quarter of a million on them by today. Don’t believe it? Just go to www.pubmed.com and search on “antioxidants”. (Quick side-note on this. Did you ever wonder why there are some relatively young, 50ish joggers that are supposed to be so healthy that fall over dead with massive heart attacks? The reason is due to oxidative stress (free radicals). We are always breathing in oxygen, and some of that, about 3%, turns into free radicals. It is a natural and normal process, that can be offset by getting enough antioxidants. When you run and jog vigourously, you are breathing that much more, and getting a lot more free radicals into your body. Consequently, you better make SURE you are getting all of your antioxidants every day, and then some. Otherwise, you are putting undo stress on your body and actually aging quicker. Doh!) www.TheOnlineMLMBlueprint.com 2 How To Be Sick And Unhealthy Mike Rutkowski Anyway, what we’ve found, and what we really all know already, deep down, is that fruits and vegetables are REALLY good for us. Da. But beyond that, each different color of fruit or vegetable fights a different kind of free radical (a bad oxygen molecule). So not only do we really need to get these antioxidants into our bodies, every day. We also need to get a good variety of these antioxidants, which is why we need to get a wide variety of colors of fruits/veggies on a daily basis. Furthermore, plants are the ONLY source of antioxidants, so we can ONLY get them from fruits and vegetables. What does the government say about this? Their food pyramid used to suggest that we needed to eat 5 servings a day, minimum, of fruits + vegetables. That was an absolute minimum, but they’ve had to update this. They increased the count to 7, and now suggest 7 to 13 servings per day. That’s a lot of plant life! How much do YOU eat, consistently, every day? Studies say LESS THAN ONE serving of fruit. (Interesting fact: what is the most frequently eaten vegetable in the U.S? Answer: a potato, in the form of French fries!) Ok great, so we need to eat a bunch of fruit and vegetables. Doesn’t seem too hard (although most of us never even do that much.) But, there is a problem even here. The problem has to do with industrial production of our food and globalization. When we over-use the soil, it becomes nutrient-depleted. Which of course means that the food that grows from it is also nutrient-depleted. In addition to that, when we use herbicides and pesticides, a side effect is to unintentionally weaken the nutrient value of the plants that we are growing. Essentially, they no longer have to fend for themselves, which they do chemically by means of antioxidants. So again, we end up with less nutritious food. When food is transported to us from around the world, if it is not canned or packaged, it must be picked before it is ripe so that it does not go bad before it reaches the grocery store. In that case, it is picked before the nutritional value is fully developed, and it doesn’t gain any additional value by sitting around before we get to it. Further, the fruit goes through a “gassing” process before it is displayed, so that it looks more colorful and tantalizing than it actually is. (As you may know, the deeper the color of fruit or vegetable, the more nutrients it has.) So, what is the end result of all this? Basically, the fresh fruit that we eat, the little bit that we do, isn’t as healthy as we think. The best you can do is to get all organic, or better yet wild, but as you know that will be pricey, and fruit and vegetables are already expensive as it is. To give you a tangible example, and I’ll have to pull out the study and reference it here, but I know the numbers are pretty close: A woman in 1950 used to be able to eat one peach and get all of her daily requirement of vitamin A. That same woman today would have to eat 53 peaches to get all of her vitamin A! www.TheOnlineMLMBlueprint.com 3 How To Be Sick And Unhealthy Mike Rutkowski Alright, so all this sounds pretty grim, sorry about that. Bottom-line, what are your choices? The good news is that I’ve got a new choice for you that is much better than the traditional two. Here they all are: 1. Keep doing what you probably already are. Don’t eat any fruit, or just eat a random banana, apple, or some grapes (which is essentially like not eating any anyway). Isn’t it funny how we feel all proud and healthy when we have just one piece of fruit, and think we are accomplishing something? What will the results be with this choice? Quite predicatable: • You’ll save a few dollars now. Yahoo!! • Have lower energy, and probably sleeping problems • Open yourself up to a myriad of health issues • Greatly increase your chance of having heart disease or cancer • Generally have an increasing amount of aches and pains (and no, that isn’t “natural”) • Age at a more rapid pace • Generally have a lower quality of life, especially later in life • Have MUCH higher health costs later 2. Freak out now, and buy a ton of organic fruit/veggies everyday to eat. What will the results be here: • High cost now ($10+ per day, to get what you really need) • Inconvenient, need to go to the store often, have time to prepare, etc. • Greatly reduce chance of heart disease or cancer (up to 33%) • Greatly reduce health costs later in life • Enjoy a greater quality of life, more energy, better sleep, less aches, etc. 3. I have another way. It doesn’t involve the negatives of choice #1, or the cost or inconvenience of choice #2. Let’s face it, you already knew some of this information, but you haven’t done anything about it yet. With this method, you get: • The equivalent of 13 servings of commonly eaten fruits and vegetables, on an antioxidant basis • The cost is $4/day for that (would be $12-16/day at grocery store!) • Is in juice form, delivered right to your door, and it tastes great • Includes 19 different superfruits of all colors, a number of which you can’t get in a grocery store. • Based on the Acai berry, a wonder fruit from the Amazon that has 5-10 times the antioxidants of blueberries, and more antioxidants than any other fruit yet discovered. • Of course, you could always drink half the amount and get 6-7 servings of fruit for $2.
