             SEBD EDCATION SOCIAL WORKER POST
                        12TH MAY 2009

1. Please can you tell us about your experience of working with children,
families and carers in challenging situations?

2. What do you consider to be the key tasks and challenges of an
Education Social Worker working with pupils with social, emotional and
   behavioural difficulties?

3. What legislation do you think you would need to have a working
knowledge of to fulfil the role of an Education Social Worker working
with pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties?

4. What is your view on compulsory education? And what is your view on
taking legal action against parents whose children do not attend
   school?

5. Let’s give you a scenario:

The Head Teacher at Wirral Alternative Schools Programme has
recently referred a case to you. John is a 15 year old boy who was
excluded from his previous school for persistent violent behaviour.
John has also admitted taking part in a series of burglaries and is at
risk of receiving a custodial sentence. Although John has proved
difficult to engage with previously he has begun to form a positive
relationship with his Youth Offending Service Worker who is preparing
a Pre Sentence Report prior to a court hearing in three weeks time.
John’s mum is a single parent and is at the end of her tether. She has
cooperated fully in three meetings aimed at introducing John to WASP
following his exclusion. John, however, has refused to attend.

How would you deal with this situation?

6. Let me give you another scenario:

You’re working with a child but have a difference of opinion with the
Head Teacher about how to support the child’s regular attendance at
   school.

How would you deal with this situation?
7. The role of an ESW increasingly involves the use of attendance data.
Please tell us about your skills and experience in the use of data?

8. Tell me about the personal qualities you would bring to the post?

9. Have you got any questions you’d like to ask us?

                                                                 M. Clarke
