What is Millennium Volunteers?

The Millennium Volunteers Sports Network North West is a
sports project for young people aged 16-24 who want to be
involved in, plan and deliver sports activities as a volunteer.

As a Millennium Volunteer you will be invited to commit 200
hours of your spare time to sports volunteering within a year.

All Millennium Volunteers will complete a Sports Volunteer Plan
which asks for some personal details, experience you have of
volunteering (you will not be excluded if you don’t have any) and
some ideas of what you would like to do as a Millennium
Volunteer.

You can choose new voluntary activities or you can continue
your existing volunteering in sport if you already volunteer. You
will be involved in planning your participation and will get
assistance and support to help you carry out your proposed
activities.

Your personal achievement will be recognised and celebrated as
you progress towards the 200 hours of volunteering. You will
receive a whistle, stopwatch and citybag when you have
completed 50 hours, a Millennium Volunteer Certificate and a
sweatshirt when you have completed 100 hours and an Award of
Excellence and a fleece jacket when you have completed 200
hours of volunteering within the year.

Support you can expect

Your Mentor
In order to help you in planning and carrying out your volunteering activities you
will be supported by a mentor. Your mentor will be a person who will work in
partnership with you to develop your confidence, skills, knowledge, potential,
talent and contacts. She or he, will be someone who will work with you to develop
a trusting relationship and build on what you’re into. Your mentor could be:
someone you already know; someone whose advice you trust; someone who is
involved in the sports you are into; or, someone who you may not know, but
someone who you will be able to get lots of valuable support from.

 It’s your choice!
 You and your mentor will work together to help you complete your Volunteer
Plan. In a similar way, together, you will plan, review and record your sports
voluntary activities as you go along.
 When you have started on your 200 hours of Sports Volunteering you will
meet with your mentor regularly to discuss your progress, your successes, any
problems you may be experiencing, your strengths and weaknesses and to
identify any training or development needs you may have.
 You and your mentor will agree your voluntary activities for the next period
and you will be offered the opportunity to join other MV’s to share
experiences and to participate in any special regional sports events involving
  Millennium Volunteers.
 Your mentor will be expected to provide regular reports on your progress.

Your Supervisor
Your supervisor is the person who is in overall charge of the activities you are
involved in at your placement, it may be the event organiser, head coach, team
manager, secretary of the organisation, a PE teacher, games referee or youth
worker, etc. They may also be your mentor, but they don’t have to be.

What you need to do to get involved

 Ask a person that you think you can develop a trusting relationship with to be
your mentor (if you can’t think of anyone, don’t worry, help finding one will be
     offered).
 Spend some time with your mentor, first discussing, then completing, the
attached Sport Volunteer Plan (see next section).
 Send the completed plan to the address on page 11.
