Hangzhou in Brief:
Famous for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritages, Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province,
is located just a 1.5-hour train ride to the west of Shanghai. Marco Polo, the noted Italian traveler in
the l3th century, once described Hangzhou as “the most beautiful and luxurious city in the world.”

The region boasts the most vibrant private-owned economy in China. For the last 18 years,
Hangzhou has experienced a sustained period of double-digit economic growth. In 2008, Hangzhou
GDP grew by 11% to almost 70 billion USD and per capita GDP was over $10,000, putting Hangzhou
in the top 10 wealthiest cities in China. A US$4.34 billion high-speed train is under construction that
will connect Shanghai and Hangzhou in 38 minutes. Hangzhou has a strong manufacturing sector
and the key industries include textiles and garments, electronic & telecommunications, machinery
manufacturing and food and beverages, information technology, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
