Marco Polo, the noted Italian traveler in the l3th century, once described Hangzhou as “the most beautiful and luxurious city in the world.” The region boasts the most vibrant private-owned economy in China. For the last 18 years, Hangzhou has experienced a sustained period of double-digit economic growth. In 2008, Hangzhou GDP grew by 11% to almost 70 billion USD and per capita GDP was over $10,000, putting Hangzhou in the top 10 wealthiest cities in China. A US$4.34 billion high-speed train is under construction that will connect Shanghai and Hangzhou in 38 minutes.
