Any girls interested in playing basketball this year will need to tryout on Wednesday and Thursday
October 21st and 22nd. Tryouts will start after school in the gym. You will need to sign up with Coach
Kubicsek some time before the tryouts and you will need to have a physical before you can tryout.
Physical forms can be found on the district website or in the trainer’s office.

students must have a picture ID or they will not be allowed in the dance. When purchasing a ticket for a
former student, please have their correct name, no nicknames, so we can check our past graduate list of
students.

with their alpha counselor. The test will be given on Oct. 28 at 7:30 AM at AHS. There is no cost for this
test. The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test battery which helps to identify different skills and knowledge.

The varsity tennis team finished the regular season with a 10-1 rout of Elkins Tuesday at home. The win
locked up second place in district. The bulldogs are 10 and 1 for the year. Congratulations to Andrew
Littlefield with a 40 match winning streak, he also teamed up with Dan Garcia to dominate in doubles.
Captain Kevin Tse and Wayne Chang remained unbeaten and number one in doubles! Also, Karen Huang
and Fabiana Cirino teamed up to win 1st in girls doubles. The district tournament begins Friday at 3 pm!

Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Attention all DECA students! If you are attending the Rockets game or U of H Mini Competition, please
meet in the auditorium at 7:00 am tomorrow morning. All members serving on committees should also
plan to attend this meeting.

Picture retakes are tomorrow, Wednesday October 21st. If you were absent or did not receive an ID
card, then you need to take your picture tomorrow during your English class.
The yearbook and newspaper staffs took home top honors at the Texas Association Journalism
Educator’s Conference held this weekend in San Antonio. Earning superior awards, the top award give,
were yearbook editor Marisa Zollinger in digital print and The Lend editor Raylea Barrow in review
writing. Also, The Legend’s lead writer Mary Ellen Knewtson took home toe excellence award in feature
writing. Congratulations staff!

The Vocal Region Audition took place this Saturday. Out of the 25 AHS Choir members who advanced to
this competition, 16 students made the Region Choir and 7 of these students advanced to pre-area. The
AHS choir program again had a strong showing at this competition. Good job Choir!

All freshmen and sophomores interested in octathlon should attend the first octathlon meeting on
Wednesday in A9, in Mrs. Orta’s room.

Austin High school is partnering with St. Luke’s blood Center to host our annual fall blood drive. It will be
held in the girl’s gym on Friday, November 6. You must be 17 years old or older to participate and weigh
110 pounds or more. 17-year-old donors must also have parental consent. Please consider giving the gift
of life. Your donation can help up to three people. Sign up with your social studies teacher.

The senior Pro Grad tee shirts are in! The shirts are available for pick up during lunch all this week.

The girls basketball program will be having a car wash this Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm at Chase Bank in
New Territory. Please come out to get your car washed and support the girl’s basketball team.

The freshmen Girls Basketball Team is looking for Team Managers for the upcoming season. If you are
interested, please see Coach Kubicsek.

The girl’s golf team finished 3rd at the LCISD Varsity invitational yesterday. Melinda McClure and Kristin
Gilbert led the way for the girl’s white team, while Katie David and Deysha Whatley were the low scores
for the Red team. All the girls played great and are showing big improvements over last year.

There will be a JV volleyball game at Austin and a Varsity game at Wheeler versus Travis high school.
Come support the team!

Last night our swimmers swam a dual meet against Lamar, Terry, and Foster High schools. Both boys
and girls won 3-0. Boys won the 400 free relay. Christy Wolterman's 500 free time was 5:30!!!!! Peter
Fu's 200 IM time was 2:06!!! Come to our swim meets on Thursdays at the Don Cook Natatorium!

The freshman football team blew out Dulles 39-6. Jacob Tao rushed for 3 touchdowns and passed for 2
more, one to Brady Langston and one to Kenton McFarland. Sam Vohlmer, Josh Rahman and Reggie
Anderson were the leading tacklers for the Bulldog defense.

The tennis team kept it rolling with a 10-0 win over Bush yesterday. Chase Mack and Alex Valdez
dominated their doubles match 6-1, 6-1. On the girls side, Peyton Abernathy teamed up with Karen
Huang for a match clinching win.

We must beat Dulles again to stay ahead of the pack!

The varsity tennis team clinched 2nd place in district with an 11-4 win at Travis on Wednesday. Kevin tse
continued his great senior campaign winning his doubles match, with partner Wayne Chang, and rolling
to a singles win at the No.1 spot. Andrew Littlefield also sparkled in singles winning 6-0, 6-0. On the girls
side, Belinda Ma and Jennie Ho earned key victories in both their doubles and singles matches. The
Bulldogs are 8-1 on the season.

The volleyball team is now tied for first place in district with Travis. There are only 5 district matches left
before playoffs. The next few games are VERY important! Tonight’s match-up is against Clements at
Hopson at 7pm. Friday is the last home game for the varsity team against Dulles at 7pm. Both games
need fan support! Come out and cheer on the lady bulldogs to victory.

 The Bulldog freshman A team defeated Travis Thursday night by a score of 15-12. Jacob Tao scored both
Austin touchdowns on a 74 yard run and a 50 yard reception from Josh Kenebrew with 50 seconds left in
the game. Kenebrew passed to Josh Rahman for the two point conversion. Ian Harter intercepted a pass
to ice the game with twenty seconds left. A goal line stand at the end of the first half by the Bulldog mad
dog defense and an interception by Tim Iijr helped the Dogs hold onto a 7-6 halftime lead and eventual
victory. The varsity Bulldogs return to action today at Travis. There is a home volleyball game today
against Bush, game times are 5, 6, and 7. Come support the girls!

yesterday at the Austin Tennis Center. Renan Mirto remained undefeated for the year in both doubles
and singles. Mirto teamed up with Sean Hang to roll 6-0, 6-0 in doubles before blistering his longtime
buddy Paul Nguyen 6-0, 6-1 in singles. Andrew Littlefield and Jessica Ho also kept up their fine play in
mixed doubles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The Bulldogs return to action Friday at Travis.

The 3rd annual AHS dodge ball tournament will be on October 17th from 2-4 PM @ AHS. You can pick up
information on signing up for the game during all three lunches

Homecoming is approaching, so ladies, when shopping for your dress, please keep in mind the length of
your dress. It must be school dress code length. However, you are allowed to wear strapless or
spaghetti straps. Please just keep it tasteful. And guys, no jeans are allowed. Come dressed in your best.
Only Austin students and former Austin students will be allowed to attend the dance. All students must
have a picture ID or they will not be allowed in the dance. When purchasing a ticket for a former
student, you must give their correct name, no nicknames, so we can check our past graduate list of
students.

DECA students, there is a general meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in the auditorium. The meeting begins
promptly at 6:50 am. If you are interested in competing or earning a letter jacket, you must be in
attendance at the meeting.

Attention Dawg Squad, there is a mandatory meeting today after school, so be there!

The AHS student book group will meet at 2:45 PM on Wednesday, October 7th in the library. They are
reading “Of Sound Mind” a story grounded in America sign language

Students who want to sign up for the Armed Services Vocational Battery or ASVAB test can do so
through Oct. 16, 2009 with their alpha counselor. The test will be given on Oct. 28 at 7:30 AM at AHS.
There is no cost for this test. The ASVAB is a multi-aptitude test battery which helps to identify different
skills and knowledge.
This evening the band and the Angels will be performing at FBISD’s annual Band Night at Mercer
Stadium. The performance time for the band is 6:30 AM. Please come out and support these great

The Bulldogs lost last night 10-41.
The JV tennis team continued their fine district play whipping Hightower yesterday 17-2. Gabby Tran and
Jonathan Varghese sparked the rout with a mixed doubles victory. On the boys side, Chase Mack and
Aaron Kasnavia rolled as did Brian Pinfold, Kush Patel, and Sharat Nayak.
