Radio City Music Hall Bus Trip
Back by popular demand, Horsham Township will be sponsoring a bus trip to the world renowned Radio City Music Hall . We will have orchestra/1st MEZZ seating for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes. This is a wonderful show for the entire family.! Candy Cane Day
Ages: 3-6yrs Location: Community Center An annual tradition in Horsham Township, our annual Candy Cane Day will be held on Friday, December 18 from 2-4pm for ages 3-5. This program is for parents & kids, and will include crafts, games, and even a cooking project! Please dress your child in clothing they can get messy. Parent and Child Fun

Watercolor Painting Class/Forum
Age: Adults Location: Community Center This will be an open forum for watercolor painters, those who want to learn about watercolor painting or those who want to brush up on their painting skills. At the first class, the class will decide as a group how the class is going to flow and what subjects will be studied. It will be suggested what supplies you will want to have for the class based on the subjects that the class will study . Barbara Surick, an accomplished local watercolor painter, will lead the class through this 8 week adventure.

KidzArt: Squiggles to Grins
Ages: 2-4 yrs Location: Community Center Young ones are introduced to the lines and shapes that make up the ‘language’ of art. This is achieved through creative activities designed to enhance their motor skills, and complemented with inspiring storytelling, poetry, and sing-alongs created by Parents’ Choice Award winning KidzArt® singer/songwriters. At this age level they find great delight in exploring this new language by using washable paints and other non-toxic art materials to create recognizable forms. Their artful squiggles are soon followed by proud grins.

Age: 3-5 yrs. Location: Carpenter Park A fun introduction for 3,4, and 5 year olds to the world of soccer! This is an activity-based program, with an emphasis on the “Game Based” approach to coaching soccer within a fun learning environment. Each child receives instruction in a small group setting from one of the professional U.K. Elite Soccer coaches. Parents are welcome to stay and join in the fun!

Learn to Ice Skate
Ages: 3yrs - Adult Location: The Rick at Warwick Learn to Skate is designed to teach basic skating skills while providing a fun, family oriented atmosphere. Our goal is for skaters to achieve a proficient level of skating either of hockey, figure or recreational skating. There are general sessions for anybody ages 5 through adult, as well as a session just for tots (3-5 years) and their parents. This year, The Rink at Warwick will be utilizing the US Figure Skating Basic Skills Program, and each participant will become a registered member with USFS and receive the USFS monthly magazine as part of their registration fees.

Ladies’ Kickboxing Class

Your Guide to the Horsham Township Library
Colle ctions
The library has more than 81,000 books and recordings in three age-appropriate areas. The Children’s collection caters to boys and girls from birth through sixth grade. The Teen Room offers material for students in 7th through 12 grades. The main adult collection offers Mysteries, Science Fiction/Fantasy, General Fiction, and Non-Fiction for adults. The library also offers a collection of audiobooks in both audiocassette and compact disc formats. It offers collections of movies in DVD format and music CDs for both adults and children. The library subscribes to 13 newspapers, retaining back issues for 2 months. It subscribes to 141 magazines, retaining back issues for 2 years. The library is glad to place reserve requests for any items not currently on the shelf. The library will telephone or email patrons when items are ready to pick up at the check-out desk.

Meeting Spa ce
Meeting rooms for 30 to 180 people are available at a nominal charge for local civic organizations. Please reserve ahead of time by contacting the Circulation Supervisor at (215) 443-2609, x 207. Three conference rooms seating up to six people are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A Cafe with coin-operated coffee, tea, soft drink and snack machines is located just off the library’s main entrance. It is a convenient place to relax and talk with friends.

Information Resources
Library patrons may log on to the following information resources using public access computers at the library. Patrons with a Horsham Township library card can use their barcode number to log-on to these resources remotely from home, school or office by clicking on the links on the library’s webpage at www.HorshamLibrary.org. Library borrowers may also log-in to their account to monitor items checked out and their due dates. They may renew selected items on line (with some limitations) and may place their own reserve requests on line. To use this feature of the library’s computer system, patrons must set up a PIN number to serve as a password to work in conjunction with their library card. The library offers access to 41 databases included in the Pennsylvania Online World of Electronic Resources, funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This collection includes the EBSCOHost magazine/newspaper index, on-line reference books, “NoveList” guide to fiction, auto repair manuals, the Associated Press library of images, and much more. The NewsBank database indexes the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1981 to the present, offering full text access to articles, searchable by subjects, names, and dates. The ReferenceUSA database is a directory of businesses and households. Over 1,600 downloadable audio-books are available via the library’s website. Each audio file ichecks out for 2 weeks and automatically returns itself to the library! Audiobooks can be downloaded to a computer or MP3 player. Many of the audiobooks can be burned to CDs to play in a home or car stereo. World Book Online contains every article from the print encyclopedia plus thousands more. It includes state-of-the-art multimedia, maps, editor-reviewed Web sites, special reports, and audio-video clips.

Te chnology
27 computers with high-speed Internet access are available for the public. They offer Microsoft Office Pro and Photoshop software and are networked to a black-andwhite laser printer. Patrons pay 15¢ per page for printing. The library also offers wireless Internet access for visitors who prefer to log-on using their own equipment. Access requires a library card and PIN number which can be obtained free of charge in a few minutes. A closed-circuit TV magnifier is available to help patrons with low vision. The library is a member of MC LINC , the Montgomery County Library and Information Network Consortium. The 15 member libraries in MCLINC share materials and honor one another’s library cards. A coin-operated photocopier is available for the public. Copies cost 15¢ per page. The library’s website at www.HorshamLibrary.org contains links to on-line databases, information about the library, and topical information resources.

Programs
The C hildren’s Dept. schedules story times for babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and families on a seasonal basis and offers an annual 8-week Summer Reading Program for readers of all ages. 2009 Bookmarker’s Ball October 24!
Save that date! The Bookmarker’s Ball is set for Saturday, October 24. Here’s your chance to dine and dance in the library stacks, bid for neat stuff from local businesses at the silent auction, and support the Friends of the Horsham Library.

Genea logy databases available
Two genealogy databases are available for searching in the library: Ancestry.Com and HeritageQuest. Tracing your family tree has become a popular hobby. With the advent of online databases that offer access to US Census records, immigration data, and family history materials, much of the genealogy legwork can be done from the library’s computer workstations rather than requiring trips across the country.

Friends of the Horsham Library to host “Peanuts at Bat”
A traveling exhibit of Charles M. Schulz’s baseball-themed cartoons will be on display from September 3 through October 12. 43 digital prints from the original Schulz drawings take viewers through five decades of the Peanuts Gang engaged in America’s pastime. The exhibit includes vintage Peanuts baseball memorabilia and ephemera: bobble head dolls, banners, and a board game. Also included are a Louisville Slugger Joe Shlabotnik bat (Shlabnotnik is C harlie Brown’s favorite— underperforming—player, who’s never actually seen in the strip) and an over-sized Snoopy doll decked out in his favorite team uniform.

BookF lix on-line reading resource for kids
is a fun new way to enjoy children’s books. The on-line database offers streaming videos based on well known children’s picture books produced by Weston Woods, paired with animated storybooks and educational games geared for children in pre-school through third grade. To access BookFlix visit the library’s website, click on the “on-line Resources” link, then click on the BookFlix logo. All you need to log on is your library card number. Tumblebooks, a similar collection of animated picturebooks, is also available.

3 Horshams Read

A 3-continent virtual reading collaboration linking the Horsham Libraries in the USA, Great Britain and Australia , enters its second year. Readers share opinions about books chosen by each library via the website www.3horshamread.wordpress.com. This year we’ll be reading My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult, Atonement by Ian McEwan, and Breath by Tim Winton.

Create Your Own Video Games
Ages: 8-12 yrs Location: Horsham Library Participants will creatively design, build, and edit their own video games from scratch. What action will take place? What are the objectives and outcomes? Design the action and the characters. Children will feel a sense of power and accomplishment as their characters do what they want them to do, and they see their imagination come to life on the computer screen. Age: 11-15 yrs Location: Community Center The American Red Cross will sponsor a Babysitting Workshop to teach teens how to supervise children, feed babies, prepare simple food, how to diaper and dress infants. Also, we will talk about ways to select safe toys, games, how to stay safe on the job, prevent accidents, how to respond to emergencies and job interview tips. Create Your Own Video GameLevel 2
Ages: 9-12 yrs Location: Horsham Library Students will build on their video game design skills with this advanced curriculum. Continue to have fun while learning new ways to add music and sounds, costumes, backgrounds, and much more. When you are finished you can even post your game online for friends and others to play! This is completely different software than is used in the Create Your Own Video Game Level 1 class, so students will never be bored!

Chess Instruction
Ages: 5-14 yrs Location: Community Center Learn how to play chess from a National Master! Adam Weissbarth has taught over 1,000 children to play chess in Pennsylvania, Washington, New Mexico and Arizona. His students have competed in local, state, and National Tournaments. Class is evenly split between a lesson and play time. The lessons range from learning the rules to advanced tournament strategies. Play time is structured to pair each student against an opponent of similar skill. All supplies included.

Beginning Robotics
Ages: 5-7 yrs Location: Horsham Library Teach Roamer the Robot to follow instructions. Can we make Roamer go six steps forward and turn left? Can we make it draw the outline of a house by the movements we program it to make? Can we get Roamer to go from Pennsylvania to Arizona on a map? Roamer can even be taught to play music! This is a great class for any child who is interested in technology and programming.

Ages: 18 & up Location: Community Center This six-week course will inspire you to new heights in the kitchen! Whether you are an experienced cook, or just looking to add variety to your recipe books, this course is for you! The six week course will cover Vegetarian Entrees; Whole Grain Salads; Indoor Grilling: Fruits,Vegetables, and How to Use Them in Meals; Quick and Easy Appetizers and Salads; How to Use Your Leftover Chicken; and Desserts. Cooking with Books
Ages: 3-5 yrs Location: Community Center This new, exciting program incorporates the fun of literature with the science of cooking! In each session, a book is read and the children share their ideas about what took place in the story. Then, it’s time for a hands-on cooking activity that relates to the story. Children will measure, stir and watch the ingredients as they magically transform to produce different foods. They will also enjoy creating a story related craft and of course, eating their snack! *There is a $5 supply fee due at the first class.*

Agility Training for Your Dog
Ages: 18 & up with dog Location: K9 JYM (Colmar, PA) This 7 week course is designed to introduce agility to all the dogs and their owners who want to explore a new and fun way to have a terrific time! Older dogs and young dogs are all excellent candidates for this class, which uses fun footwork games to teach your dog to follow you, touch a target, and other agility tasks. Take this class and it may possibly change your relationship with your dog! Agility can help solve some often asked about training issues, such as teaching your dog to ignore when other dogs are around instead of getting crazy, helping shy dogs build confidence, helping older dogs stay active, and involving and challenging all dogs. Seniors Open Afternoons
Age: 50+ Location: Community Center Come to the Horsham Township Community Center on the first and third Mondays of the month from 1:00-3:00pm starting in October. A room at the Community Center will be open for you and your friends to play games, bring your crafts and work on them, or just socialize with others. You are more than welcome to bring snacks and a beverage to enjoy.

Age: 50+ Location: Community Center Come join Horsham Township’s Seniors Group., Seniors Out Socializing, as they enjoy guest speakers, socializing, and card games. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month at 9:30am in the Community Center to enjoy breakfast and special entertainment. In the past, we have had singers, impersonators, and historical talks. We also enjoy a summer picnic every June and a holiday luncheon every December. There are also opportunities for lunch and dinner outings. We are always welcoming new voices and ideas. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends and discover new interests! So attend a meeting, bring a friend or two, and get ready to have fun! Fees are payable the morning of each program. Seniors Holiday Luncheon
Ages: 50 & up Location:Vereinigung Erzgebirge Join us for our annual Holiday Luncheon on Thursday, December 3, being held at Vereinigung Erzgebirge (the German Club) on Davisville Road in Warminster. Your price includes salad, rolls, butter, coffee, tea, ice cream, and your entree. Entree choices are Pork Schnitzel; Chicken Parmigiana; or Deviled Maryland Crab Cake. Discount Ski Tickets/Amusements
Camelback Bear Creek Blue Mountain Big Boulder Jack Frost Alpine Mountain Blue Knob Elk Mountain Seven Spring Shawnee Mountain. Roundtop/Liberty/Whitetail Ski tickets will be available, and ticket prices will be posted on our website, beginning in December. We also have tickets to Busch Gardens Tampa, Sea World, and Adventure Island Tampa.

You can register for any of the programs described in this newsletter at the Horsham Community Center, 1025 Horsham Rd., Horsham, PA 19044 between 8:30am and 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday, except for holidays, or mail your payment with a registration form and a check made payable to Horsham Township. For in-person registration we accept cash, check or credit cards. If there are not enough people registered for a class one week prior to class beginning, the class will be canceled. Sign-ups will not be taken the day a class starts, so please sign up ahead of time.

Discount Movie Tickets
Horsham Township is selling discount movie tickets. Tickets can be used at any U.S. Regal Theatre and for any movie. Stop by the Community Center to purchase your tickets for $8.00 each. They are great gift ideas because they have no expiration date on them. (price subject to change)

All Parks and Recreation programs are open to residents and non-residents. All programs will require the completion of a medical release and liability waiver. All programs have a minimum and maximum participation requirement, so please register early. Programs are subject to cancellation due to insufficient registrations, inclement weather or any other reasonable cause. NO REFUNDS will be given unless we receive at least 48 hours notice prior to the starting date of the program, or unless you provide us with a medical note stating why you cannot participate in the program. If your cancellation reduces the participation level below the required mini mum, thre will be no refund. There will be a $10 fee charged for any with drawal. No refunds are given for bus trips cancellations. If a class is canceled or closed, you will receive a full refund in the form of a check. These is a $25 charge for any check returned by the bank. Photo release: By registering for any Horsham Township Parks and Recreation Department program, you agree to allow publication of any photos taken at any program or event.
