Attendance Overall student attendance stands at 95.3% so far this year, which is above the target set by the Local Authority. Many, many thanks to the efforts of involved in reaching (and we hope maintaining!) this level. Inset Day Reminder – the school is closed to students tomorrow as there is an Inset Day for staff. School opens as usual on Monday 28th September.

Clothes Show Live
Wednesday 9th December As part of their studies, the Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE Textiles groups will be attending the Clothes Show Live at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on Wednesday 9 th December. These students are eligible for subsidised tickets. There are five (nonsubsidised) spare tickets available at £30 each (including transport and entrance). Any student who would like to be considered for one of these tickets should give their name to Mr Roberts as soon as possible. Marking Policy Staff have recently re-written the school’s Marking Policy. This will be available on the website before the end of Term 1.

School Council Congratulations to the following students who have been voted in as School Council representatives for 2009-2010: Year 7 – Callum Thompson, Courtney Ind; Year 8 – Eden Turl, Zeze Lynes; Year 9 – Mitch Thompson, Saffy Ward; Year 10 – Steven Thornhill, Breiz Lynes; Year 11 – Hayden Downey, Naomi Seaton. Famous Scientists A joint Year 7 project between the English Department and the Science Department is taking place over the next fortnight. Year 7s are being asked to write a short article about their favourite scientist. The winning article will be published in the next edition of Vale Mail. Buses – Gloucester & Dursley There was a long meeting at school yesterday morning between the owners of Applegates Coaches, the Local Authority and the school. Parents were represented at the meeting by the Vice Chair of the governing body (who has two children at the school – both users of the Gloucester bus). The meeting reached a satisfactory outcome, addressing most of the issues raised by parents. A letter will go out to the parents concerned by Tuesday of next week, outlining the decisions reached. New Toilets We are planning to open the new toilets facility next week. As reported in the last edition of Vale Mail, the design of the new toilets has come directly from requests and suggestions made by the School Council. There are seven individual cubicles (three for boys and four for girls) off the corridor down to the gym. The four hand-washing facilities are ‘motorway style’, with sensors dispensing soap and water and hot air for drying. Parents’ Evening Reminder – the Parents’ Evening (Form Tutors) will take place on Thursday 19th November. Further details will be available closer to the time.
