ISLAND PILOT NEW ERA
With the introduction of the DSe Hybrid 12m, Island Pilot brings power cruising into a whole new era. One where fuel economy takes a quantum leap. One where silent cruising is a reality. One of independence from marinas and fuel docks. One that utilizes renewable energy as the prime source of power for both cruising and living aboard. Environmentally friendly, the DSe leaves her minimal carbon footprints in her equally minimal wake.
GOING GREEN LUXURY ACCOMODATIONSL
The DSe 12m provides the cruising couple with a new level of luxury and liveability — Her on-deck Master Stateroom with forward-facing, queen-sized “Sleigh” bed has 270o water views, a private dressing room and a full “ensuite” head and shower — Over-stuffed settees in the Deck House seat the entire crew comfortably with superior views out the oversized windows — The Galley is equipped with induction cooktop, hitech refrigerator/freezer and Advantium oven — The Guest Stateroom is fitted with twin berths that convert
Driving the DSe 12m is something very special. Nothing prepares you for the silence and smoothness of operation. There is no motor to start up before casting off — Slide the gear shifts into reverse and feel the instant thrust pulling you away from the dock. There is no need to start the diesel for a trip up to 4 hours or so — between solar, wind and battery power, the DSe will cruise up to 6 knots in electric mode, recharging her battery once you put the hook down. For a longer trip or to quick-charge the battery, start the diesels, tucked away in their own sound-deadening enclosures.
to a queen or king and has its own head and shower — the Bridge has wrap-around seating for 10, is open to the fresh air or closes to take advantage of the DSe’s air conditioning. A pair of custom helm chairs are positioned to easily operate the DSe motor controls and navigation electronics.
“RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX”
On Monday, January 14th, 2008, the DSe 12m hit the water for the first time on the G T Men River in Zhuhai City, China, thus marking the birth of a new paradigm in yachting. She worked “Right of the Box!” Final trials in October, 2008, confirmed her efficiency (see chart to the right); as expected, the DSe is extremely stingy on fuel, especially at her “Sweet Spot” of 7 knots (5 NM/Gallon) resulting ina range of over 500 NM at 7 knots from only 100 gallons. Whenever the diesels are running, the batteries are being charged, storing energy for cruising in electric mode or nights on the hook. Of course, the ultimate in “stinginess” is when the DSe is running exclusively on solar power — ZERO GALLONS PER HOUR — ZERO EMISSIONS! In keeping with Island Pilot’s philosophy of only offering the best and latest proven technology, production versions of the DSe 12m will be equipped with a pair of 1.5 kW wind turbines from Urban Green Energy. These are located up and out of the way and with their vertical axis, are omni-directional and extremely quiet. They’ll produce energy whenever the wind is in excess of 8 knots — perfect for a night on the hook in the Caribbean.
The 6 kW solar array is mounted up out of the way over the deckhouse and bridge. Wired to MPPT solar controller/chargers, this PV array can be thought of as a generator providing a constant flow of energy whenever the sun is shining. On a bright day, it will produce enough power to drive the DSe at speeds approaching 5 knots. It also provides the power for the appliances, air conditioning and keeps the battery charged for overnight demands while at anchor. Pure sine wave inverters provide 120 VAC power for outlets, the entertainment system, the fridge, and the microwave.

Read what Peter Janssen, Editorial Director of MotorBoating, has to say about the exciting new DSe 12m.
— Here’s what they’re saying:
Several writers have already been on board the DSe
Capt. Richard Thiel, Editor-in-Chief, Power & Motoryacht, “The brains behind the DSe, Reuben Trane, is a mad scientist sort of guy, as evidenced by his iconoclastic but nevertheless successful Island Pilot. I like to think of Trane as powerboating’s answer to Buckminster Fuller.” (Jan’09) Chuck Husick, Power Cruising, “Aside from its hybrid technology, the Island Pilot DSe 12m is a very comfortable and spacious boat, ideal for a couple and their guests.” (Jan/Feb’09) John Wooldridge, Editor-in-Chief, Passagemaker, “ Trane’s commitment to a new design that offers displacement cruisers comfortable accommodations, minimal carbon footprint, and maximum use of natural power sources through cutting-edge equipment is, to my mind, heroic.” (Feb’09) Capt. Bill Pike, Senior Editor, Power & Motoryacht, “The edginess of the DSe’s technology and performance is nicely matched by the unusual nature of her design and layout below decks.” (Jan’09)
