Flood Safety Tips

What can you do other than insure your property to get ready for a flood? Follow these steps to help minimize loss to your home, and ensure your family’s safety. Prepare your House: • Make sure your sump pump is working. • Clear debris from gutters and downspouts. • Anchor any fuel tanks. An unanchored tank in your basement can be torn free by floodwaters and the broken supply line can contaminate your basement. • Have a licensed electrician raise your electric components (switches, sockets, circuit breakers) at least 12” above your home’s projected flood elevation. • Place the furnace and water heater on masonry or pressure treated lumber at least 12” above the projected flood elevation. Safeguard your Possessions: • Make sure any photos or videos of all of your important possessions are in a safe place. These documents will help you file a full flood insurance claim. • Store important documents and irreplaceable personal objects where they won’t be damaged. If major flooding is expected in your area, consider putting them in a storage facility. • If major flooding is expected, move furniture and valuables to the upper levels of your home. Develop a Family Emergency Plan: • Port emergency telephone numbers by the phone. Teach children to dial 911. • Plan and practice a flood evacuation route with your family. • Ask an out-of-state relative or friend to be the “family contact” in case your family is separated during a flood. Make sure everyone in your family knows the name, address and telephone number of this contact. • Don’t forget to have a plan for your pets too. Remember to talk to your insurance agent if you have any questions or would like additional information about flood safety. Tire Safety
As the only parts of the car that physically touch the ground, they are one of the key factors affecting a vehicle’s handling, braking and overall highway safety. What steps can you take to ensure that your tires stay in optimal condition? Some trouble signs to look for: Visually inspect your tires on a regular basis. If you note any of the following early warning signs, have a professional inspection performed in order to check/correct items that may be causing the condition. Cracking or cuts in the sidewall. Uneven tread wear. This can be caused by improper inflation, misaligned wheels, damaged tires, or by problems with suspension parts. • Excessively worn tread. Most modern tires have tread-wear indicator bars running across the tread, which signal the minimum tread depth of -inch. 1/16 When the tread wears down to these bars, its time for new tires. • Inexpensive tread-wear gauges are available at auto-parts and tire stores. • Alternatively, you can use a Lincoln-head penny as a tread-wear indicator. Insert the penny into the tire groove with Lincoln’s head towards the tire. If you can see the top of Abe’s head, the tread is too worn. • Bulges or blisters. If you see a bulge or blister on the sidewall, replace the tire at once. These signal potential weak spots that could lead to tire failure. • Excessive vibration. Tire vibration may be a sign a wheel is misaligned, unbalanced or bent. It could also signal internal tire damage. Don’t ignore vibration. Have the vehicle serviced at once. Surveys also show that as many as half of the cars on the road may be riding on one or more underinflated tires. • • Taken from

WEDDING PROTECTOR PLAN NOW AVAILABLE “Peace of mind for your special day” You’ve always dreamed of planning the perfect wedding, but no matter how carefully you plan it, there are many things that can go wrong – things that are beyond your control. What if your reception venue goes out of business a month before the wedding, and you lose your deposit and have to find a new location? Or a hurricane causes your wedding to be postponed? What if your bridal shop closes, leaving you without a gown? A wedding is an investment, and as the average cost of weddings rises, now up to $27,000, wedding insurance is needed more than ever. After all, you wouldn’t buy a new car that costs that much without insuring it against damage. For as little as $160, your wedding insurance policy can cover a variety of situations, including, but not limited to: No dress: You can get repair or replacement cost if the bride wedding gown or the groom’s tuxedo is lost or damaged. Lost deposits: We can reimburse your deposit if a vendor goes out of business, declares bankruptcy before your wedding, or simply fails to show up. Lost rings: You can receive repair or replacement cost if the bride or groom’s wedding bands are lost or damaged. Severe Weather: If severe weather (such as a hurricane) forces you to postpone your wedding, we can provide reimbursement for non-recoverable expenses. Transportation Shutdown: If you have to postpone the wedding because a commercial transportation shutdown prevents the bride, groom or their parents from getting there, you can receive reimbursement for nonrecoverable expenses.
