PREREQUISITES: Compliance with North Idaho College’s admissions standards COURSE DESCRIPTION: . 1. Course Description: Weld 160L-01, “Oxy-Fuel Gas Principles and Practices”, is a five (5) credit hour course that contains laboratory assignments and exercises. This is the companion course to Weld 100A and will focus on in-depth practical experiences and structured practical exercises in Oxy-Fuel welding, brazing, and soldering applications as they might apply to the welder in the workplace. There are no pre or co-requisites required for enrollment in this course. This is a basic course that provides theory and techniques for all aspects of welding, but concentrates on oxyacetylene fuel applications. Instruction and practice are given in welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, light-gauge metal, brazing, hardsurfacing, and pipe using the four positions. It includes instruction and practice in both welding and cutting

COURSE OUTCOMES: A. Provide a detailed look at modern oxy-fuel welding applications, technologies, and related processes with emphasis on practical workplace experiences. B. Develop detailed student understanding and use of specific set-up, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting techniques used in OxyAcetylene welding and brazing. Develop student eye-hand coordination and manipulation techniques common to oxy-fuel welding applications in the flat, horizontal, vertical (up & down), and overhead positions. Develop student understanding and conceptualization of safe practices and procedures associated with oxy-fuel welding and allied applications.

Course Requirements: A. Attendance...All students are expected to attend all scheduled instruction. Students are responsible for the completion of missed work. Missed lab work can only be made-up in extraordinary circumstances so students should make every effort to attend all scheduled sessions. Attendance is an evaluated component of this course. Laboratory exercises… There are a total of eight (8) oxy-acetylene welding exercises and four (4) oxy-fuel brazing/soldering exercises that are a required and evaluated component of this course.

4. General Education Abilities: This course will emphasize the NIC general education outcomes of creative thinking and problem solving, mathematical, scientific and symbolic reasoning, and wellness. Students will be exposed to these outcomes throughout the semester both in the provided lecture material, practical exercises, and the assigned reading requirements. 5. Course Evaluation: This course can be taken only for a letter grade (no pass/fail). Final course grades will be based on the following: A. Attendance... 25% (250 points) of the total grade is based on attendance. Laboratory exercises… 75% (750 points) of the total grade is based on the overall average of the required 12 lab exercises. Grade/Point distribution... system. this course is NOT graded on a curve type

There are no caveats for enrollment in this course. Required personal equipment & supplies. Flint striker, tip cleaner set, wire “shoe” brush, regular slip-joint pliers, 12” adjustable wrench, 2 lb ball peen hammer, 12” 4R steel rule, lockable tool box, pad lock, shade 5 goggles or safety glasses, light duty gauntlet style welding gloves, heavy duty gauntlet style welding gloves, clear safety glasses (polycarbonate), and all leather 6” tall or greater boots (preferred steel toe). Optional Equipment. Medium Side cutter pliers, leather jacket, leather sleeves, leather apron, welding cap, ear plugs. Disability.
