Daily feed ration guidance notes
1. Feeding periods These will vary according to individual enterprises. They can be recorded according to stage of production, or on a seasonal/number of day’s basis, whichever best suits your feeding system, i.e. for a dairy herd, ration sheets could be kept for the different stages of lactation. 2. Feedstuffs Enter hay, silage, feeding straw, arable silage etc, in the Forage column. Compound feeds, cereals, sugar beet nuts, lucerne nuts etc, should be entered into Concentrates & Straights column. 3. To calculate Daily Dry Matter Intake (Daily dry matter intake) of livestock: As a general rule, the DDMI of an animal is calculated as being between 2.5 – 3.0 % of it’s body weight. For example: 80kg. Mule ewe: DDMI = 2.5 % x 80/100 = 2.0k.gDM/day 4. To calculate the Annual Dry Matter Intake (Dry matter intake/yr.): Daily dry matter intake x 365 5. To calculate the Dry matter% of feedstuff Refer to section 10.13.13 of SA Standards for guidance on the dry matter (Dry matter) content of feedstuffs. 6. To record kg. Fresh weight fed per group, per day (A) Enter total freshweight of each feedstuff fed to the whole group each day, in kilograms. 7. To calculate kg. Fresh weight per animal, per day (B) Divide the freshweight amount of each feed fed to the group, by the number of animals within group. 8. To calculate kg. Dry matter fed per animal, per day (C) Multiply (B) by the Dry matter% of the feedstuff. 9. To record the Organic status of each feedstuff (D-F) Enter the Organic/2C, or non-organic percentage for each feedstuff. Please note that ‘2C’ refers to any crop harvested from land during the second year of conversion. If a partially organic compound is fed, please refer to the feed ticket for the proportions of organic/2C, or non-organic ingredients included. 10. To calculate the kg. Dry matter of each feedstuff, by organic status, fed per animal/day (G -J) Multiply (C) by (D), (E) or (F) then divide by 100 to give the amount of dry matter (Dry matter fed to each animal per day, in kilograms. 11. To calculate the Total kg. Dry matter of each feedstuff fed per animal, according to status, for the entire feeding period (K-M): Multiply (G), (H) or (J) by the number of days in the feeding period. 12. To calculate the Total kg. Fresh weight fed per group during feeding period: Multiply (A) by the number of days in the feeding period. 13. To calculate the percentage Organic/2C/Non organic feedstuffs fed daily. Take the total of column C and use this total to divide into the total of column G and multiply by 100 to give P. Repeat for column H to give Q and again for column J to give R. These are the percentages of Organic/2C/Non organic fed on a daily basis.
