Finding the right Nursery
Once you have made the decision to find a day care setting for your child the hard work begins! As parents we understand how difficult it is to choose the best environment for your individual child. In this pack we hope to give you enough information to help you begin to make your decision. We would also invite you to visit our day nursery and meet the staff, children and other parents who make our nursery so special!

Our Nursery
St Andrew’s Day Nursery is situated on Church Road, in Shilton, near St Andrew‟s Church. We cater for children from 6 weeks to 5 years in a refurbished Primary School building occupying a secluded and secure position with an extensive outdoor area, off road parking and disabled access. St Andrew’s Day Nursery is a private Day Nursery which is at the heart of the village of Shilton, and is very proud of its “home from home” environment, its high quality care and education delivered by qualified and dedicated staff. The children come first at St Andrew‟s and we work very closely with parents to cater for their children‟s individual needs.

Activities
The activities your child will be invited to enjoy are carefully selected and planned by our qualified staff to meet the individual ability and stage of development of your child. Each half term our staff will select and plan a series of activities around particular themes which are appropriate for your child. These activities will enable our staff to engage, stimulate and develop your child‟s skills, knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The children‟s work will be displayed throughout the nursery and the staff‟s planning will be displayed on the information boards in each room.

The Early Years Foundation Stage
Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born.

Settling In Key workers

3

St Andrew’s operates a key worker system to help your child feel more secure and to enable you as parents/carers to build a special friendship with these members of staff. We will be able to work together and share information about your child to provide the best quality care for them. Research has proven that in a Nursery environment, close relationships between carers and children in the early years will contribute towards improving the child‟s level of confidence, self-esteem and overall well being.

The first days
Prior to starting you will be offered two “Stay and Play” sessions in the Nursery. You and your child will be able to meet a member of our management team, your child‟s appointed key worker and the children that they will be playing alongside. During this time we will start to collate information the nursery needs for the safe welfare of your child and to give you the opportunity to ask any questions or share any concerns. You will be able to familiarise yourselves with the building, staff and routines. We will then work with you to arrange further stay and play sessions if requested. You are always welcome to lengthen this “settling in” period for your peace of mind.

Children’s Daily Diaries
The key worker will keep a daily record of your child‟s day, which may include: Achievements and Skills Meals and toileting Friendships and Interests Photographs Comments from the Children themselves We would welcome your comments within the diaries regarding our day-to-day activities through to our special events. Your feedback from your child‟s home-life is useful to us especially for children who are learning to talk, for example a special event they may have enjoyed or are going to in the near future.

Partnership with parents
We want to build an excellent relationship with all our parent/carers and with our open door policy we would encourage you to pop in at any time of the day. Your views and concerns will always be listened to and acted upon wherever possible.

4

If you have any interests or hobbies that you think the children would be interested in please speak to a member of staff about coming in to share these with us. Our staff will try their utmost to be available to discuss any issues with parents and the nursery proprietors are more than happy to receive feedback from parents on the service we provide. Our comments, compliments and complaints form is available on the Parent‟s Information Board.

Visits and visitors
Throughout the year supervised visitors will be invited to share with the children their:

Interests / Experiences Cultures / Religions Skills / Talents
This will further broaden our children‟s learning experience and will link in with the themes the nursery staff have chosen throughout the year. Some activities planned include dance and art workshops. Staff will also arrange fun days in the Nursery and also safe visits to places of interest for the older children with your signed consent.

St Andrew’s “Policies and Procedures”
To ensure that the care and education we give your child is of the highest quality and is consistently applied throughout the nursery we have a series of policies and procedures. All the staff are made aware of our policies through induction, training and development. These policies and procedures are regularly reflected upon and adapted to meet the needs of our parents, our children and the Early Years Foundation Stage welfare requirements.
