______

Preface

_ _ _ ___ _ _

We are glad to present the first edition

of "Pedindex

a Handbook on Pediatric Medicine" to your hand.
The compilation is based on the indication and the dosage schedule of different drugs of different therapeutic classes from

SQUARE house. We hope. this new compilation will be helpful in
your daily practice while treating pediatric patients. Publication of Pedindex is a part of SQUARE's continual effort to share updated clinical information of the medicines for pediatrics only. We really believe that your suggestions or comments would help us to bring further improvement on this initiation.

Best Regards Product Management Department

Body Surface Area
In physiology and medicine, the Body Surface Area (BSA) is the measured or calculated su rface of a human body. For many clinical purposes BSA is a better indicator of metabolic mass than body weight because it is less affected by abnormal adipose mass. Estimation of BSA is simpler than many measures of volume.
Uses r:l Renal function is usually fractioned over the BSA to gain an

appreciation of the true required Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR);
r:l The cardiac index is a measure of cardiac output divided by the BSA,

giving a better approximation of the required cardiac output;
r:l Chemotherapy is often dosed according to the patient's BSA. r:l Glucocorticoid dosing is also expressed in terms of BSA for calcu lating

maintenance doses or to compare high dose use with maintenance requirement
Calculation : Equations

Various calculations have been published to arrive at the BSA without direct measurement, starting in 1916 with the Dubois & Dubois formula. A commonly used formula is the Mosteller formula, published in 1 987: Metric (area in square metres from weight in kilograms and height in centimetres):
X=

weight x height 3600

Half-English units (area in square metres from weight in pounds, height in inches): weight x height 3125

Another is the Haycock formula On children):
x
=

0.024265 x weight (kg),mo x height (cm)"'"

Du Bois & Du Bois :
x
=

(71 .84 x weight (kg)'''' x height (cm),n,)/ 1 0000

Dr,
Body Surface Area (m)
=

0.007184 x

(patient height in em)"" x (patient weight in kg)

Boyd's Fonnuia:
S
=

0.00003207 x height (cm)" x (weight (kg) x 1 000)·'".."

..'· ....hO

Normal BSA Values

General BSA is taken to be 1.7 m'. Men Women Child (9 years) Child (1 Oars) Child (12-13 years) 1 .9 m' 1 .6 m' 1.07 m' 1 . 1 4 m' 1 .33 m'

8MI
Body Mass Index is a number calculated from an individual's weight and heigh that is used to determine whether a person is within, or outside of a normal weight range.

Example : A child weighing 76 Ibs. is ordered to receive 1 50 mg of "x"
•

6h. The pediatric drug handbook states the recommended dose is 8-20 mg/kg/day in four divided doses. The "x" is supplied in 100 mg scored tablets. What is the safe total daily dose? 76 Ibs. + 2.2 kg/ l b. Minimum Dose: 8 mg/kg/day x 34.5 kg Maximum Dose: 20 mg/kg/day x 34.5 kg
Calculations based on Body Surface Area

(BSA)

The formula for calculating child's dosage is:-

-1C':.7:-CM'"'2o-- x

Child's BSA

Example: If a child weighs 35 pounds and is 30 inches tall, If the "y"

is ordered at 1 00 mg/m 2, what is the child's correct dosage?

The BSA of that baby is:I

X=

weight x height 3125

BSA Sqrt {(35 x 30) / 3125} 0.58 m2 Therefore the child's dose should be: 100 mg x 0.58 (BSA of the Baby) 58 mg.
