Bill Clinton in 1974 None Harry Blackmun Summary of Life William Jefferson Blythe IV was born August 19, 1946, at Julia Chester Hospital in Hope, Arkansas. His father William Jefferson Blythe was a traveling salesman killed in an automobile accident before his son’s birth. His stepfather Roger Clinton (who adopted him), was an abusive alcoholic who died 128 Bill Clinton of cancer in 1968. Clinton’s mother was a nurse. He had one half brother, Roger. As a young child, Bill lived with his grandparents while his mother studied nursing in New Orleans. They taught him to read and count by age three and impressed him with their belief in racial tolerance while living in the segregated south. When Clinton was seven years old, he moved with his family to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he attended public schools. He enjoyed playing the saxophone in the school band and was offered a scholarship to study music. Bill decided to attend Georgetown University because of his interest in politics and Foreign Service. He graduated with a degree in international affairs in 1968. The following fall, Clinton moved to England to study at Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar. After two years he accepted a scholarship at Yale University, where he received a law degree in 1973. Hillary Rodham and Bill Clinton met in the Yale University law library and were married on October 11, 1975. They have one daughter, Chelsea. While still a law student, Mrs. Clinton worked with the Children’s Defense fund. In 1974, she was one of the lawyers for the House Judiciary Committee considering impeachment charges against President Richard Nixon. As First Lady, Hillary headed the Task Force on National Health Care Reform. Bill Clinton was professor of law at the University of Arkansas (1973-1976) before becoming attorney general of Arkansas (1977-1979). In 1978, he was named on of the Ten Outstanding Young Men in the country by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. At age 32, Clinton became the youngest governor in the country, serving Arkansas from 1979-1981 and 1983-1992. He brought many new jobs to Arkansas, worked for improved health care, and supported education reform. He resigned the governorship to run for president of the United States. In 1998, as a result of issues surrounding personal indiscretions with a young woman White House intern, Clinton was the second U.S. president to be impeached by the House of Representatives. He was tried in the Senate and found not guilty of the charges brought against him. He apologized to the nation for his actions and continued to have unprecedented popular approval ratings for his job as president. In the world, he successfully dispatched peace keeping forces to war-torn Bosnia and bombed Iraq when Saddam Hussein stopped United Nations inspections for evidence of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. He became a global proponent for an expanded NATO, more open international trade, and a worldwide campaign against drug trafficking. He drew huge crowds when he traveled through South America, Europe, Russia, Africa, and China, advocating U.S. style freedom. On January 20, 2001, Bill and Hillary Clinton attended the inauguration of President George W. Bush. Bill is currently retired, Hillary is a senator from New York, and Chelsea is attending college.
