MESSAGE from Advisory Board Chairperson
Della Reese, entertainment legend and Faith in Action advocate, says that “most people want to help …most people want to do good…Faith in Action gives them a chance to do simple things that make a big difference.” Our Newberg area Faith in Action programs have consisted of many volunteers doing simple things that have made a tremendous difference in the lives of others. Collectively, we make a big difference! And, our community is grateful. From the many hours we volunteer to help seniors and children with special needs to the widespread support of our recent Sing-Along Messiah to help fund this program, the Newberg area relies on Faith in Action. May we be encouraged as we help and do good . . . so that our simple things continue to make a big difference. Frank Engle

PROGRAMS Caregivers - Volunteers help older adults with
light housekeeping, yardwork, minor repairs, meal and library book delivery, transportation to appointments, and by making friendly visits.

Homebound Book Delivery - Newberg Public
Library selects individualized bags of books of Faith in Action volunteers to deliver bi-monthly to homebound individuals.

Family Friends - Volunteers befriend a child with
special needs due to a chronic health condition or disability, offering love, companionship and support to the entire family.

Strong for Life - Volunteers coach older adults in
an easy to follow exercise routine designed to improve strength, function, and balance.

CarrierLink - Letter carriers watch for an accumulation of mail or any other signs of distress so that Faith in Action can notify emergency contacts. CarrierLink provides security for individuals living alone.

Caregiver Support - Individuals caring for an
older adult meet on the second and fourth Thursday, 1:30-3:00pm, for a time of sharing and problem solving. Families participating in the Family Friends program meet once a month.

2006 YEAR IN REVIEW
Faith in Action celebrated a decade of service in 2006. Some of the ways Faith in Action commemorated this special anniversary was with a new logo design, a display of black and white photos on canvass, and as honorees at Providence Newberg Health Foundation’s Hearts of Gold luncheon. Many Faith in Action volunteers provided the same services for older adults which have been offered since the program’s inception in 1996, things such as transportation to appointments, friendly visiting, and yardwork. Other volunteers coached Strong for Life participants in an exercise program. Another group of volunteers became Family Friends to children who have special needs and their families. By the end of 2006, 23 children had been matched with a Family Friend. The total number of hours donated by all volunteers was 3,750. Families of care recipients were supported in their roles with resources, referrals and support groups. The Caregiver Support Group for individuals caring for older adults meets twice a month and a new Family Friends Support Group for families of children with special needs started in November and will meet monthly. Faith in Action continues to partner with letter carriers in CarrierLink, a program which offers security for individuals living alone, and with the Newberg Public Library to deliver books to the homebound. West Chehalem Church was added as a coalition member in 2006, and a new partnership was formed with AARP to recruit and involve older adult volunteers. The AARP partnership was announced at a coalition meeting in August. A safety Grab Bar Installation Day was the first joint project. The Donor Dinner was held in February at the French Bear Restaurant. A new fundraising event in 2006 was a Sing-Along Messiah, which proved to be a great community event and the beginning of a new tradition. Our new website is up and running at www.FaithinActionNewberg.org.
