March 1, 2007 Dear Parents and Students, I know you’re getting excited about our big show….and we are too! We know you’ve marked your calendar with the dates but in case you need reminding... Dress Rehearsal is Friday, June 22 and the Year End Performance is Saturday, June 23. Curtain call for the Matinee Performance is 1:00 and the Evening Performance is 6:00. There will be separate dress rehearsals for each performance and details about each rehearsal, the performance, show tickets and costume accessories are included in this document. Please keep this hand-out and use it as a quick reference for all of your recital questions. If you lose this hand-out you can also refer to the studio web site – our address is www.charlestondancecenter.com and download a printable version. Our site is updated with recital information – including pictures of our recital costumes!

Recital Program Ad Contest –win tuition free for next year!
For the last couple of weeks we’ve distributed information about our recital program. I hope your children have given you the ad information we distributed in class – if not we have extras at the front desk. The information included a recital program from last year’s show and details about how to have your child’s individual picture included in the recital program. Charleston Dance Center includes all class pictures in the recital program, but those dancers selling at least $175 worth of ads will have their individual picture in the program too! The Charleston Dance Center appreciates everyone who makes the effort to sell ads – production costs for the recital are more than you can imagine! We need our familes’ support - and to show you how much we appreciate your efforts we’re offering FREE TUITION FOR A YEAR to the student who sells the most ads! Don’t think you can sell enough to win the contest? No worries! Everyone who enters the contest is a winner, because everyone who sells $175 will be entered into a drawing where tons of great studio prizes will be awarded. Everyone is a winner! If you need help figuring out how the ads work please give Kim a call – the recital program is a great place to write special notes or well-wishes to your child on his/her recital day. We will gladly help you!

Recital Costumes

We’re waiting for the final shipments of costumes to arrive and once they’re all here we’ll distribute them to our students in class. For now, I’d like to pass along some “tips” for storing recital costumes. 1. Take your costumes out of their bags. Place your child’s name in every piece of the costume. 2. Take inventory of each costume. Make sure all the accessories that are suppose to come with it are included. If any accessory is missing please let the studio know. The sooner we know, the longer we have to request and receive a replacement. 3. If your costume has crinoline underneath, please hang the costume upside down. 4. Any costume needing special attachments please sew on when you receive the costume, but first make sure you know where to sew it on. (For ex: your costume might have tails that need to be attached to the back of the costume. Make sure you know exactly where to sew on the tail for ex: the tail high or is it low? Finding out before you sew might save you “redo” time later on.

5. Other costumes should be stored on a hanger. Consider placing the accessories in a zip lock bag (marked with the dancer’s name) and attaching that bag to the hanger. 6. Pack an extra pair of tights to bring to the show! You’ll be surprised how many last minute rips we see!

HIP HOP RECITAL COSTUMES
Hip Hop students are responsible for wearing their hip hop recital costumes to class the week of March 12. We’ll dance in the costumes during class to see if this “look” will work for the hip hop numbers in the show. When you’re purchasing outfits for hip hop, remember that we’ll be wearing these clothes under heavy stage lights during the show – vivid colors work best! Also, if possible, please purchase new shoes or wear shoes that haven’t been worn often for the show. New shoes will look better onstage than worn, old shoes! If you have questions please let us know asap! 406.7593

RECITAL TICKETS
Admission to the Year End Performance is $7 per person. However, we’ll be selling tickets to Charleston Dance Center families only beginning April 1, for the price of $5 per person. We’ll open ticket sales to the public beginning May 1 at a cost of $7 per person. There is no discount for seniors or children. Every person requiring his/her own seat (regardless of age) will be required to purchase a ticket. If a small child sits on an adult’s lap during the performance a ticket isn’t necessary for his/her admission. Tickets can be purchased at the front desk of the studio or at the door. Please encourage family and friends to purchase show tickets in advance. Prepaid tickets help us to the limit the work load leading right up to the show and the last year the line waiting to purchase admission tickets was long. Some folks missed part of the opening number trying to purchase tickets right before show time. April 1: May 1: Tickets go on sale to the students/families of Charleston Dance Center for the advance discounted price of $5 per person. Ticket sales to the public begin. $7 per person.

We’ve spent a great deal of time to determine the best way to distribute show tickets – this is a challenge considering our families who have children in both the Matinee Performance as well as the Evening Performance. After careful consideration here is how recital tickets will be distributed:

Parents who have only one child in either performance: Tickets will be purchased at the regular price for your child’s performance. Should you decide to take your child to the other performance you would purchase a ticket for admission to that show, but your child would be given a ticket. Parents who have a child in both performances: Tickets will be purchased at regular price for one show, you will be “comped” one ticket for the second performance. Parents who have two or more children in both performances: Please call the studio in the mornings between 8:30 and 11:30 to discuss your show tickets. We’ll ask you which performance you expect most of your family to attend. You will buy your tickets to that performance. We will “comp” you two tickets to the second performance. I promise you we’ll be fair to you!

STUDENT TUITION ACCOUNTS
All accounts must be paid in full in order for students to participate in the Year End Performance. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you have questions regarding the status of your account, please call the studio in the mornings between 8:30 and 11:30. Charleston Dance Center will be auditing student accounts before the end of the year and will gladly assist you in making sure your account is paid in full. Note: For your convenience, CDC accepts Visa and MasterCard. AND cash, too! If you are behind in your tuition payment please make the effort now to get your account straightened out. I do not want to pull your child from the recital, but will for non-payment.

Charleston Dance Center 2006-2007 Year End Performance Hand-Out

As a service to our students, Charleston Dance Center asks a photographer to come into the studio and photograph our classes and individual students in their recital costumes. This year we’ve contracted again with Jeannie Fanjoy of Don’t Blink Photography. She offers a variety of photo packages at a variety of prices. One huge plus – this year’s ordering will be done online – there is no prepayment required to have individual recital pictures taken! Look for a price list and package options to be posted on the Charleston Dance Center website soon. You can browse Jeannie’s information there. Pictures will be taken the week of April 16 - 20. During picture week there will be no regular dance classes, we are taking pictures Monday through Friday. All pictures will be taken at our James Island facility. The pink studio will be used as a dressing room - and the back studio will be used for taking pictures.

Here’s how recital pictures will work:
We have scheduled times for your class pictures and have tried to create days where students in similar classes will have pictures taken. Here is a breakdown of the week’s schedule (a more detailed schedule will follow): Monday, April 16 Preschool Classes Tuesday, April 17 Hip Hop Classes Wednesday, April 18 Ballet, Lyrical, Pointe Thursday, April 19 Prejazz/tap, JTI, JTII, JTIII, Tap Friday, April 20 Hip Hop Troupe Team Pictures On your scheduled day, please make sure you arrive early and sign in.

Note: Don’t Blink Photography asks that you provide an email address to order pictures online. In our effort to provide safe online ordering, Don’t Blink Photography will email you after picture week, provide you with user id and password and detailed instructions how to order. Their online ordering system is safe and secure. Don’t Blink Photography will never sell your email address to a third party.
After signing in, please make sure that your child is dressed, hair is fixed and make-up is done prior to picture time. When it’s time for your class’s pictures, we will take the class picture first, in the dance costume I have selected. (my costume pick is listed in the far right column of the table below). Once the class picture is taken, we’ll begin to take individual pictures of students in that class. Feel free to have your child’s individual picture taken in whichever costume you prefer. NOTE: Dancers selling enough ads to have individual pictures in the program are welcome to have their picture taken at any point in the week, in any costume you choose. Many opt to have individual pictures taken during the time allotted for their class picture time. Please let our photographer know you are an “Ad Kid” when having your individual picture taken. Your best picture will be sent directly to the studio’s graphic designer, fooGraphics, for inclusion in the recital program.

DRESS REHEARSAL
The Dress Rehearsal is mandatory and is Friday, June 22 at the Gaillard Auditorium. EVERY DANCER UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST HAVE A PARENT WITH THEM FOR DRESS REHEARSAL. PARENTS OF DANCERS DROPPED OFF AT THE GAILLARD AUDITORIUM WILL BE CALLED AND ASKED TO PICK-UP YOUR CHILD WITHOUT REHEARSAL. (I.E. THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PERFORM IN THE RECITAL). There will be three dress rehearsals, one for the Matinee Performance, one for the Evening Performance and one for the Just Dance! Performance Companies. The Matinee Performance Rehearsal will begin at 10:00 a.m., the Evening Performance Rehearsal will begin at 12:00 p.m. and the Just Dance! Performance Company rehearsal will begin at the end of the Evening Performance Rehearsal.

Note: The Just Dance! Hip Hop Troupe will rehearse during the Evening Performance Rehearsal.
There is no acceptable excuse for missing the Dress Rehearsal, and if a dancer misses the Dress Rehearsal, the dancer is ineligible to perform in the recital. Note: A student who leaves early and doesn’t rehearse all of his/her dances will only perform in those dances that were rehearsed! Dress Rehearsal is very important to performers, as it provides dancers with the opportunity to become comfortable with the stage, the set-up backstage, their placement on stage and dancing in front of people. I do not use the rehearsal to run and re-run numbers. I use the rehearsal to double-check dancer placement in the dances, to work on music cues and to set lighting for each number in the show. Please be patient during dress rehearsal - I promise to move things along as quickly as possible. Because we dress the dancers in their full recital costumes (including the designated colored shoe, tights, hair, etc.) and recital make-up, the rehearsal gives us a chance to determine if any last minute changes or new requirements will make each number look and/or run more smoothly. (For example – costumes with a hat might all need the bow to be facing the same direction. We’ll talk about this at dress rehearsal). Note: If your child needs a snack during Dress Rehearsal, please consider packing a cooler (marked with your name) with CLEAR liquids to drink which won’t stain costumes in case of an accident. (i.e. Sprite, 7-Up, etc.). You might also consider bringing a hand-held game or coloring books (crayons only) to occupy rehearsal time.

Matinee Performance Dress Rehearsal
Students participating in the Matinee Performance must arrive at the Gaillard Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. to locate dressing rooms designated for their class (room assignments will be posted on each dressing room door) and to get dressed in their first number’s costume. The Matinee Performance Rehearsal will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will run in the order of the performances in the show. After your child has rehearsed his/her first number, please change their clothes into his/her second dance costume and return to the audience. We will rehearse the Matinee Performance Finale during Intermission. Once you have finished rehearsing your last number, you are free to leave the auditorium.

Here’s the order of the Matinee Performance Rehearsal (the actual performance line-up will follow):

Performance Line-Ups
Below are the two line-ups for this year’s shows. We expect dancers to have quick costume changes and in the past have often “planted” helpers directly off-stage to help dancers dress quickly. After review, if you have difficulties with costumes changes, please alert the front desk. We must document who will be quickly changing on the side of the stage.

MATINEE PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES
Dancers may begin to arrive at the Gaillard Auditorium on Saturday, June 23rd at 11:30 a.m. (accompanied by one adult only, per dancer). Dancers must enter the theatre through the stage door (it’s on the side of the building, across from Saffron’s Bakery. The stage door will be marked with a poster reading “Charleston Dance Center”. Parents will be required to present a recital admission ticket before entering at this door. Note: The stage door entrance will be closed and locked at 12:30 p.m. After 12:30 p.m. any late arriving performers will enter the auditorium through the front entrance with the public. The auditorium will open to the public for admission (from the front entrance ONLY) beginning at 12:00 p.m. Anyone other than students entering the auditorium will be required to present an admission ticket at the stage entrance and front entrance. No exceptions. Upon arrival, students will report to their assigned dressing rooms (their dressing rooms will be the same dressing rooms as marked for the dress rehearsal - with the class name and meeting day and time posted) and begin to dress for their first number. Parents: Upon arrival, please dress your child in the costume needed for the first half of the performance. Prior to the show beginning, please take your seat in the audience. At intermission you will be permitted to come back to the dressing room and get your child dressed in the costume needed for the second half of the performance. Charleston Dance Center will have someone assigned to “man” each dressing room during the performance. When you arrive at the assigned dressing room be sure to introduce your child to the person assigned to their dressing room and let your child know that person will be “in charge” during the show. After arrival and until the show ends all dancers will remain in their assigned dressing rooms. Under no circumstance (i.e. wearing a cover-up or in costume) are dancers permitted in the auditorium or the audience until the show ends. Dancers must remain in their assigned dressing room during the performance. We cannot have children running behind the stage, in the audience or walking up the aisles of the auditorium. It is not safe. Dancers will have the opportunity during Dress Rehearsal to watch the rest of the performance.

Just A Suggestion...
I strongly recommend that you place your child’s name in his/her costume. Throughout the years I have developed a system that helps me keep myself organized during performances. I place each of my costumes on separate hangers. I store all the accessories for that costume in a labeled zip lock bag, which I attach to the costume’s hanger. This system really helps when you’re in a hurry; of course you’re welcome to use whatever method works best for you! I have found that the following items are invaluable to dancers in the dressing room: safety pins, bobby pins, hair spray, hair brush, curling iron, back-up tights (especially crucial for dancers who have fast costume changes during Page 11

Charleston Dance Center 2006-2007 Year End Performance Hand-Out the show). Remember that we’re performing under heavy lights, and stage make-up is necessary. However, looking like Tammy Fay is not!!!! Two last suggestions: 1) A cold drink is always welcome during a performance and coolers are permitted in the dressing rooms. Please bring a marked cooler with only clear liquid drinks. We don’t want any drinks that could spill and stain a costume! 2) If you plan to bring coloring books to help keep your child busy, please bring crayons and NOT magic markers!!! (this request is based on experience!)

EVENING PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES
Dancers may begin to arrive at the Gaillard Auditorium on Saturday, June 23nd at 4:30 p.m. (accompanied by one adult only, per dancer). Dancers must enter the theatre through the stage door (it’s on the side of the building, across from Saffron’s Bakery. The stage door will be marked with a poster reading “Charleston Dance Center”. Note: The stage door entrance will be closed and locked at 5:30 p.m. After 5:30 p.m. any late arriving performers will enter the auditorium through the front entrance with the public. The auditorium will open to the public for admission (from the front entrance ONLY) beginning at 5:00 pm. VERY IMPORTANT: After arrival and until the show ends all dancers will remain in their assigned dressing rooms. Under no circumstance (i.e. wearing a cover-up or in costume) are dancers permitted in the auditorium or the audience until the show ends. Dancers must remain in their assigned dressing room during the performance. We cannot have children running behind the stage, loose in the audience or walking up the aisles of the auditorium. It is not safe. Dancers will have the opportunity during Dress Rehearsal to watch the rest of the performance.

RECITAL KEEPSAKES
2006-2007 Year End Performance Video
Charleston Dance Center has a NO VIDEO CAMERA policy during all Year End Performances, therefore you may not bring a video camera into the Gaillard Auditorium. The reason for this policy is simple – many times video cameras obstruct the view of audience members and some parents are not courteous to others when their child is on stage. I have been to performances where video cameras were allowed and parents brought in tripods and extension cords – causing a huge fire hazard! I will not allow the possibility of ruining the performance with video cameras blocking someone’s view of the show - You may bring video cameras into dress rehearsal. If you are found to have smuggled in a video camera to the performances, you will be asked to leave. There will be order forms for the videos available at the front desk. They must be preordered and paid for ($40 each) prior to the recital. They will be available for pick-up when we open for Fall classes.
