Approve Minutes: Board approval is requested for the Minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of October 15, 2009. Special Recognitions: a. Student of the Month: Loma Vista Middle School is delighted to honor Angela Patini as the Alvord Unified School District Student of the Month for November 2009. Angela Patini is a teacher’s dream. Academically, Angel is a straight “A” student. She completes all assignments on time, and gives her very best effort on everything she does. She excels in all subjects, but has a special gift and passion for science. Last year, Angela won the Loma Vista Science Fair and the District Science Fair. She represented Alvord Unified School District at the County level and earned a silver medal. Angela participates in PLUS (Peer Leaders Uniting Students) and co-led a forum of 40 students last year. Angela is looking forward to taking the lead in the forum again this year. These forums stress the importance of honesty, responsibility, and leadership – all areas in which Angela has been an exemplary model for her peers. It is a great pleasure to honor Angela Patini as the Alvord Unified School District Student of the Month for November 2009. b. Certificated Employee of the Month: Loma Vista Middle School is proud to recognize Froukje Schaafsma-Smith as the Alvord Unified School District Certificated Employee of the Month for November 2009. Froukje Schaafsma-Smith has been the art teacher at Loma Vista for the past 14 years. Mrs. Schaafsma-Smith has always been committed to maintaining high expectations for all students and holds all students to a high standard. Her contributions to Loma Vista and the Alvord Unified School District include; changing young lives forever by exposing them to great artists, art, coordinating various District and school poster contests, Master Teacher for many student teachers programs, an art partnership with La Sierra University, displaying student art at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, local retirement homes and at Stokoe Elementary School as well as decorating the Alvord District Board Room with student art. Mrs. Schaafsma-Smith’s generosity to the community includes sending student-made holiday cards to area convalescent hospitals and enlisting the support of staff and students to care for animals by their participation in a yearly animal shelter art auction. It is a great pleasure to honor Froukje Schaafsma-Smith as the Alvord Unified School District Certificated Employee of the Month for November 2009.

Classified Employee of the Month: Loma Vista Middle School is proud to recognize Tammy McGregor as the Alvord Unified School District Classified Employee of the Month for November 2009. Tammy McGregor has worked for Alvord Unified School District since December of 2003 and at Loma Vista Middle School as a Clerk I since 2004. Tammy is not only hard working, loyal and professional but she is proactive, creative, a team player and a fantastic mom to her son Jalen. Tammy does everything: daily attendance, tracking down missing cum files, tracking down missing students, handling all student records as well as coordinating registration every year. Tammy is organized, efficient, an admired leader on campus and is always willing to go above and beyond until all tasks are completed. It is a great pleasure to honor Tammy McGregor as the Alvord Unified School District Classified Employee of the Month for November 2009.

Volunteer of the Month: Loma Vista Middle School is proud to recognize Andy Benavidez as the Alvord Unified School District Volunteer of the Month for November 2009. Andy Benavides has been helping with the Loma Vista Running Club for the past 4 years. Mr. Benavidez met Coach Baur and the Running Club at a race and realized that he lived right by the school and volunteered to train runners. Mr. Benavidez has shown up every morning at 7:30 a.m. to work out with the students and to assist with the Running Club. Mr. Benavidez is a runner himself and brings a plethora of knowledge and training skills to our program as well as raising the level of all of our runners in the Running Club. Many of our students go on to high school and excel in the cross country and track programs. Mr. Benavidez brings a concern and dedication that is second to none. It is a great pleasure to honor Andy Benavidez as the Alvord Unified School District Volunteer of the Month for November 2009.

Discuss and Review – Tie Break Criteria: A discussion between staff and the Board of Education is needed to decide the Tie Break Criteria related to certificated layoffs. Tie Break Criteria is needed in the event there is more than one certificated employee with the same seniority date.

Discuss and Review - Reduction or Elimination of Particular Kinds of Service: A discussion between staff and the Board of Education is needed to consider reduction or elimination of particular kinds of service related to certificated layoffs. Education Code Section 44951 requires that a certificated employee be notified on or before March 15 if he or she may be released from his or her position.

Instructional Support Services 14. CONDUCT PUBLIC HEARING – Global Tides Charter School Petition: The Charter Act requires that the District hold an initial Public Hearing of this charter petition within 30 days of receipt of the petition. This Public Hearing is being held to determine the level of support for the petition by teachers employed by the District, other employees of the District and parents.
