OVERVIEW
Heart disease is the second cause of maternal mortality after suicide in the UK. This is the follow up meeting of the 51st RCOG Study Group on cardiac disease in pregnancy. A multidisciplinary forum is clearly required to provide appropriate advice and optimal care for women with pre-existing heart disease, acquired or congenital. Furthermore, increasing numbers of patients present with new onset heart disease such as acute coronary syndromes or cardiomyopathies, posing new diagnostic and management challenges to health care. Issues such as level of antenatal care and monitoring required, thromboprophylaxis, mode of delivery and endocarditis prophylaxis need to be discussed and recommendations be made for the individual patient. Last but not least timely advice on contraception and assessment of the potential risks associated with pregnancy are essential and should be provided to all women with heart disease so that they can plan their lives and avoid preventable morbidity and mortality. Convenor of Study Groups: Co-convenors: Convenor of Meetings: Professor Philip Baker FRCOG, Manchester Professor Michael Gatzoulis, London Professor Philip J Steer FRCOG, London Professor Jane E Norman FRCOG, Glasgow

Cardiac Disease and Pregnancy Study Group Textbook
Since 1973 the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has regularly convened Study Groups to address important growth areas within obstetrics and gynaecology. The resulting volume, containing the papers presented and also edited transcripts of the discussions, provides a summary of the subject that is both authoritative and up-to-date. Published by the RCOG Press, the Cardiac Disease and Pregnancy book will be launched on the day of the follow up meeting and will be on sale at a reduced price for that day only. It will provide a valuable resource for all those seeking a greater understanding of the issues surrounding pregnant women with heart disease. Further information on the Study Group series is available on the RCOG Bookshop website at www.rcog.org.uk/studygroups.
