SECTION 1 – ODO CHECK

PRO VERSION

ENSURE WE FILL IN START ODO AND TIME BEFORE YOU LEAVE! COVER PAGE! You are presently in the parking lot at the start line. Proceed to exit the parking lot towards the lighted intersection. STOP at the stop sign. Trip Odometer. Turn Left.

Keep right along the theater side – do not go through the lights. Go right up the right ramp.
At all times when coming to intersections, unless otherwise directed, proceed straight. You should come across your first set of lights, keep going straight.
If you think you are lost, you can open an envelope to get a restart position. There are 3 envelopes with restart positions. If you use them, you will lose points. You must return them intact to avoid losing points. Have fun; open them if you really need to. Each section suggests which envelope to open if lost. IMPORTANT – You should not spend more than 3 hours, if you think you are in real trouble, after 2 hours, open envelope #3. It will get you close to the finish line and allow you to get valuable near end of rally points. If you get lost early open envelope #1 or #2. As often as necessary, record on the instructions the actual street name(s) or locations you are at to make restarts from known points possible. IF AT 1:00pm YOU ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE, RETURN TO BASE.

Questions are worth points. Answer the best you can. Usually they come up near the mileage reading; other times they appear a bit earlier to give you time to look. And at times, they are not exactly in order relative to other questions.
Rally Pro Tip: each unnecessary lane change could effect your odometer.

You should come across another set of lights, keep going straight. Turn right at the 3rd set of lights around the 2.1km mark. STeeR
As you approach 3km, you will be looking for a lamp post / power post on your right more than slightly in the brush, just off the road, this is the 3km mark. Don’t pass it, stop at it. Across from it on the left is a house with the number 35 of the garage. Remember this post may be 2.8km or 3.2km on your vehicle so do not miss it or pass it by. Look for the 35 on the garage.

Your odometer should read 3.0 km.

Record your odometer reading. Calculate your Error Factor (see below).
ODO (ODOMETER) CHECK:

__________ __________

An odometer check is the first part of any rally with the purpose being to compare your odometer reading with the official reading and then to calculate the error factor for your odometer should it be off by a significant amount. If your error factor is not equal to 1, you must multiply the official distances in the route by the error factor. To calculate your error factor, follow the upcoming instructions. In almost all cases, unless your odometer is way off, none of this will be an issue after the odometer check. And, in order to minimize this type of error, the instructions will ask you to “trip odometer” on a frequent basis. This means, push the button or whatever and set it back to 0. Error Factor = Your Distance Official Distance

At all times follow the speed limit unless otherwise directed. Minimize lane changes as it may affect the odometer.

SECTION 2 – WARM UP (if lost open – well you shouldn’t be lost yet)
For example, if you ODO read 3.1, the math would produce a factor of 1.03 or 3% more than it should have. So when you see a distance of lets say 10k, you should be looking for 10.3k. IE the turns etc. will always be a bit later than expected. Instead of STeeR at 10 it would be 10.3 for you car…

Proceed forward. Go to the end of the paved road and then execute a 180. Now go back to the same post and stop. TODO ie Trip your odometer EOS

SPCA Mission Document:
The Nova Scotia SPCA is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals and to the promotion of respect and humane care for animals. In support thereof, the Nova Scotia SPCA is committed to providing humane leadership in animal advocacy, protection, education, and veterinary care. We are committed to compassionately serving and protecting the animal community by providing quality animal care, a safe haven, and promoting the human/animal bond. Circle the first word in this paragraph for mega points. Through innovative programs, we aim to end animal overpopulation, cruelty and neglect.

On the next page, will be the next section. It is what is called a “line map section”. To complete this section, simply start at the Car or green dot and follow the line until you get to the “EOS”. The distance is accumulating unless you are instructed to “trip odometer”. The map is not drawn to scale, nor is it oriented, ie north could be in all directions. Just pay attention to the “turns”. Additional instructions (or questions) at or near various distances may be found in a table below the map.

***** Map 1 restart point – this is where you restart if you have opened envelope #1. Time now for a break. If you wish. You are going to be given 22 minutes for breaks during this rally. This is the first one of three. Use them wisely. Remember to keep track of how much time you are using against your “contingency”. You will also later be asked to exit the vehicle 2 additional times that won’t count against your “break” time.

CHANGE OF FORMAT… On the next page is a “Tulip Instruction” section. All distances are accumulative once again. You will enter the intersection in the direction of the “dot” and leave in the direction of the “arrow”. The distance is indicated in the top left corner. DO NOT read across and down the table. Each instruction points to the next one (follow the arrow) in order. It is advisable to cross out each cell as you finish it. Remember the EOS abbreviation, it will appear here. Some instructions may not have distances; do them as before, the first chance you get to do it, the first time the intersection matches the cell diagram. There are some questions below with the distance in which you should start looking.

Example: Both of these say turn right.

Pro Tip: A highlighter is a good tool for this…

To exit the lot take the driveway left most, stop at the exit. This is your next instruction, don’t miss it. TODO

SPCA Mission Document cont’d… Our core objectives are: Prevention and Education: We educate the public, and our volunteers and staff, about responsible animal care and how to develop humane, compassionate relationships with animals. Investigation and Advocacy: We investigate and report on the state of animal welfare and, based on our research, advocate changes and improvements to current practices in order to improve their well-being. Animal Care: We provide homeless and unwanted animals with shelter and care, fostering and, ultimately, adoption into permanent loving homes. Intervention and protection: In order to protect animals from further harm we intervene in cases where their needs are not being met. Communication: We listen thoughtfully and respectfully to each other and to those who provide information to us. We actively and effectively communicate with our staff, volunteers, partners, and the public.

Rally Pro Tip: Fastest time does not win the rally, but the time closest to the correct time. Points deducted for early and late times, bigger deduction for early times –so do not speed!

Puppy Mills are a cruel practice that should be stopped.
What You Can Do No one has more power to fight puppy mills than the consumer. In each individual's hands is the ability to stop the cycle of abuse that ends with the purchase of a puppy mill puppy at a pet store. Don't Buy A Dog From A Pet Store. It's that simple. Most puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Opt To Adopt Instead. When you're ready to bring a dog into your life, visit your local animal shelter. Millions of homeless dogs are waiting at animal shelters for life-long, responsible homes. You won't be supporting the puppy mill industry, and at the same time, you'll be fighting the tragic pet overpopulation problem. If you are interested in a particular breed, your animal shelter can help you locate a breed specific adoption group that will match you with the type of dog you want. In addition, some humane societies and animal shelters are working in cooperation with pet supply stores in adopting out shelter animals. Check with your local shelter to find out who they may be working with in your area. Why Adoption? Unlike buying, adoption usually focuses on matching the adopter's lifestyle and habits with the animal's needs and characteristics. When an animal is sold, profit comes first. Most pet stores will sell an animal to almost anyone. A young puppy may be sold to someone who may not have the time to take care of her. The profit motive only puts the animal's interests in jeopardy. 9
