FIMRC-Harvard 11/21/2005 FIMRC-HARVARD COMMITTEES General Meeting We have three committees for you to join. Please read the description of each committee below, and contact the appropriate committee director to start getting involved! 1. Medical Drives Committee (ktlee@fas) The Medical Drives Committee is dedicated to raising medicine, equipment, and funds for FIMRC project sites around the world. This year, we are focusing on La Carpio, a site in Costa Rica that is home to many Nicaraguan refugees. Our first project of the year is ongoing and is already a huge success. Through corporate sponsorships, neighborhood drives, and campus tabling, we have raised over $150 in donations and have collected many cases of soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes for the kids of La Carpio: in order to improve their sanitation and dental care. We will send these supplies to La Carpio over the holidays with a team from Brandeis University. Our future plans include a medical equipment drive in the Longwood Medical Area, tailored to the needs of the FIMRC clinic in La Carpio and other sites in Costa Rica. We enthusiastically welcome any new volunteers to share their ideas, show initiative, and join us in helping kids around the world gain access to good medical care! 2. Health Education Committee (jiahu@fas) The goal of the Health Education Committee is to produce informative materials for FIMRC and specifically for the clinic in La Carpio, Costa Rica. Prior to the holidays, we have worked on a pamphlet aimed at promoting personal hygiene (through proper teeth brushing and hand washing). This pamphlet will be sent with the gift bags that the Medical Drives Committee has put together. In the coming term, we plan to engage in more ambitious projects—namely, in developing a health education curriculum that can be taught to the children at FIMRC clinics. The project will likely consist of 5-10 stand-alone modules covering essential aspects of healthy living. Of course, it will be conducted in Spanish. Our goal is to have this curriculum produced before the trip to Costa Rica. Creativity is encouraged, as we hope to design games and other fun activities to teach the children. 3. Fundraising & External Liaison Committee (email@example.com) The Fundraising Committee will raise funds for FIMRC through benefit dinners, silent auctions, dances, soliciting donations from charities and sponsors, and any creative events you may have in mind. The funds serve to support La Carpio, an impoverished settlement of Nicaraguan refugees in Costa Rica that lacks the most basic resources. The Committee ultimately seeks to establish a network of students and faculty throughout Harvard and Boston who are aware of health issues facing children globally and who strive to improve their conditions. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in close collaboration with other student groups, publicity, event organization, finance, and interaction with people from a variety of fields. Our current projects include a Krispy Kreme fundraiser, a dinner and speaker event, and a collaborative fundraiser with Latino organization. We also plan to work closely with Students for Global Health, an organization at the Harvard Medical School. In order to be successful, these events require the help of students with a variety of interests and skills. Please join the Committee as we need your help and input!
