The Reunion Planning Committee has finalized plans for the upcoming 2007 Reunion, scheduled for the weekend of Friday, July 20 - Sunday July 22, 2007. A summary of the Reunion activities follows: FRIDAY JULY 20, 2007 6:00PM - Midnight: Registration & pick up gift bags. Meet and greet your classmates. Refreshments, fellowship, music fun and lively entertainment! 8:00 PM: Starlight Review with TINA TURNER starring Dorothy Harris Boggan; Comical Story by Reola Lenore McGhee & Bobetta Evans; Song by Benjamin Ely; Tap Dance by Barbara Morris Hunter & Marlene Shaw Fullilove, Song by Eugene Campbell; PATTI LABELLE starring Floyd Jean Noel Redden, and much more! Open casting call: Contact Marlene Shaw Fullilove at 901-489-5005 if you want to showcase your talent. Location: Crescent at Wolfchase Apartment Homes clubhouse located at 7819 Cresent Ridge LN, Memphis, TN 38133. Carver HS 50th- Year Anniversary Celebration
The Carver High School 50 -Year Anniversary is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend May 25 – 28, 2007. Coordinated by the GW Carver National Alumni Association, a full complement of related activities are being planned. Requests for yearbooks for the following classes are sought as preparatory materials to this occasion: ’61, ’63, 1965-1970, 1972-1980, 1982-1984, 1986, 1988 and 1995. The Carver National Alumni Association meets regularly on the 2 Saturday of each month from Noon – 1:30 PM at Bloomfield Urban Ministries Building, 105 S. Parkway W., Memphis 38109. Follow-on 2007 meetings are scheduled for January 13, February 10, March 10, April 14, May 12 & June 9. Regular meetings resume in September of each year.

Classmate Profile: Jerry M. Johnson: Educator/HS Basketball Coach

Carver HS 1962 graduate Jerry M. Johnson is currently the Head Basketball Coach at Mitchell HS, Memphis. His 40-year secondary school career has comprised teaching, administrative and athletics coaching positions with increasing levels of responsibility and challenges. Mr. Johnson's 40-year career has included responsibilities as classroom teachers, assistant principal, school athletic director, as well as assistant and head coach for multiple sports. His classroom teaching focused on subjects of American history, health and physical education, world history, and the social sciences. Athletic teams coached include basketball, football, baseball, softball and track. His post-secondary educational accomplishments include LeMoyne-Owen College, BA in Social Science, 1966; Memphis State University, Master of Education 1975; as well as post-graduate studies at Vanderbilt, Tennessee State, and Christian Brothers Universities. Jerry Johnson's career awards and honors have included Teacher of the Year at both state and local levels numerous times, National Teacher of the Year - 1st Runner Up, and Coach of the Year - Commercial Appeal Newspaper. His Mitchell HS Tigers were First Runners Up in the Tennessee State Basketball Championship game in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Mr. Johnson served his nation in military service in the US Army in Western Europe and as a military advisor in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. He was Honorably discharged in 1967. Jerry actively supports school alumni, booster club and community participation, and mentors students in applying for college, identifying economic and educational resources, resolving interpersonal conflicts, and general life guidance. His hobbies and volunteer activities include bowling, competing in community-based Olympics, and coaching senior citizens baseball. An active member of Monumental Baptist Church, Jerry and his wife Pamela have 2 sons, Jerry, Jr. and Jorr'don.

The R. B. Thompson Scholarship Committee is sponsoring the 5th Annual Prayer Breakfast in honor of R. B. Thompson, the first and long-term principal of G. W. Carver HS. This event will occur on April 29, from 9 - 11 AM in the school cafeteria, located at 1591 Pennsylvania Street, Memphis 38109. Tickets/donation to this affair are $7.
