#21 WHERE DOES GOD COME FROM? The question where does God come from? might at first sound so obvious as to not be worth the time to answer it. "God comes from heaven," we say, or "God is everywhere," or "God is eternal - God has always been, and always will be." But the question where does God come from? is really another question in disguise. That question, which is a more accurate and honest one, is: where does the idea of God come from? Why the idea of God? Because all we really have are our ideas of God. The reality of God - if there is a God - is utterly and completely wrapped in mystery. So when a Christian says "God is the holy Trinity - Father, Son and Spirit" or when a Muslim says "Allah is the one, true and only God" or when a Hindu says "Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu are gods" at best they are making a statement about their idea of God. Their claim is a faith claim, not a knowledge claim. In the end God - whatever God may or may not be - remains a mystery. Absolute Mystery. This is an incontrovertible truth of the spiritual life, and it is the necessary starting point of the spiritual life. This means that whatever idea of God we may have now, whatever idea we may cling to, we must let it go. We must allow ourselves to make the leap, the free fall, into the mystery of faith.
