Delving into the past of the many market towns and villages in the county of Surrey is a truly fascinating way to immerse yourself in the area. Spending an hour at any of the local museums (Guildford, Dorking, Haslemere, Farnham, Godalming, Leatherhead, Reigate or the Lightbox in Woking) will unlock times gone by and reveal how these places have been shaped by historic events. Many areas have guided tours by experienced bluebadged guides who bring the local area to life. Tours vary from spooky ghost strolls to life in medieval times and famous (and infamous) past residents – from Kings to scoundrels and industrialists to artists. Heritage Open Days in September, offers free access to buildings not always open to the public, including Farnham Castle, Guildford Castle, The Medieval Undercroft, Foxenden Quarry, Guildford House Gallery, Dorking Caves and the Pepperpot in Godalming, to name but a few. 12

BROOKLANDS MUSEUM

6A

BROOKLANDS Museum in Weybridge is famous for recapturing the spirit of the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation. This site, created by local wealthy land owner Hugh Locke King in 1907 ,was the first purpose built motor racing course in the world and where pioneer aviator A.V. Roe made his first experiments in powered flight. It developed to become a wonder of the Edwardian age and one of the most exciting and ‘happening’ places of the 20s and 30s Jazz Age. Brooklands embraced most of Great Britain’s automobile World Record Breaking success. In the air, the Vickers Vimy, Wellington Bomber, Hawker Hurricane and the iconic Concorde (now back on display at Brooklands) were all symbolic of the pioneering effort that pervaded these few Surrey acres. Brooklands Museum tells the full story with genuine artefacts and memorabilia. It is open every day apart from a few days over Christmas. RURAL LIFE CENTRE
The Rural Life Centre is a museum of past village life covering the years from 1750 to 1960. It is set in over ten acres of garden and woodland and housed in purpose-built and reconstructed buildings including a chapel, village hall, cricket pavilion and schoolroom. Displays show village crafts and trade such as wheelwrighting, bakers, vets and many more. An historic village playground provides entertainment for children as does a preserved narrow guage light railway which operates on Sundays. There is also an arboretum with over 100 species of trees from around the world. Send a self-addressed envelope for a diary of events. REEDS ROAD, TILFORD, FARNHAM, SURREY GU10 2DL

SHALFORD MILL
Shalford Mill is a wonderful hidden gem, in the quiet backwater of Shalford sitting across the clear water of the Tillingbourne stream. The National Trust runs regular guided tours of this well preserved early 18th century water mill. The building has remained almost unaltered since ceasing operations in 1914. Although the water wheel no longer functions, it is still possible to trace the remarkable journey of grain around the mill before it was bagged up and carted off to the bakers. SHALFORD, GUILDFORD, SURREY GU4 8BS

THE SPIKE GUILDFORD
As dusk creeps in on a dull wet September day just 100 years ago, the afternoon rain drips from overhanging shrubs lining Union Lane, a lone vagrant drags his weary feet along the narrow footpath towards a night of cruel comfort. Six o’clock approaches he knows he is not alone, other ne’er do wells hope for a night at the Guildford Spike, salt stinging his eyes, he plods wearily on, he deserves no reward for his idleness. Come and witness the life of an Edwardian vagrant. WARREN ROAD, GUILDFORD, SURREY GU1 3JH
