POOL FAQ’S State College Family YMCA A Branch of the YMCA of Centre County 1.) 2.) What is the difference between a lap and a length? A length is from one side of the pool to the other, and a lap is two lengths. How many laps make a mile? In the Recreational pool 35 laps + 10 yards makes a mile. We do not allow lap swimming in the Therapy pool. How many lengths make a mile? In the Recreational pool 70 lengths + 10 yards is equal to a mile. We do not allow lap swimming in the Therapy pool. What is the water temperature in each pool? The temperature of the Recreational pool is between 81 and 82. The temperature of the Therapy pool is between 88 and 89. How long is the Recreational pool? The Recreational pool is 25 yards long. What does member workout mean, and who can use the pool during it? Member workout is a quieter time in the pool as children are only allowed in if they are doing a private lesson (with a YMCA instructor). We reserve this time specifically for our members to get a quiet workout and to be able to use the equipment. What does Leisure swim mean? Leisure swim is the open/family swim here at the YMCA. Children are welcome in the pool during these times. When does the new pool schedule come out? A new pool schedule is put out at the beginning of every session. Pool schedules can be picked up in the lobby, and can also be found online at www.ymcaofcentrecounty.org. If my child is on the waiting list for a class, how will I know if a space opens up? When a space opens in a swim lesson we notify the first person on the waiting list. We then work down the list if spaces become available. How do I know if my child passed his/her last group lessons? Toward the end of the session your child’s instructor should pass out a progress report to let you know not only how your son/daughter did, but should also include the level that they should enroll in next. When will the pools be closed for maintenance? Both pools are closed during the YMCA’s annual shutdown week. The Therapy pool closes one other time during the year for routine maintenance (usually in March). Have more questions? Feel free to contact us! POOL FAQ’S State College Family YMCA A Branch of the YMCA of Centre County 12.) How will I be notified of pool closings for swim meets and how far in advance? We post signs on the pool doors and at the front desk. The signs are usually posted at the beginning of the week, and meets are on Saturdays. The Rec. pool is closed for the duration of the meet. Are towels available? We do not provide towels nor do we have any in the event that a towel is forgotten. How long will I have to wait to hear back about private lessons? There is no specific amount of time, although our goal is to get clients matched with an instructor as soon as possible. How long are the pools closed for thunder/lightening? The pools will be closed during a thunderstorm, and will remain closed for a half an hour after the last sight or sound of a storm. Why do I need to shower before entering the pool? We ask people to shower before entering the pool in order to keep our pool water cleaner. If people don’t rinse off, then the residues decrease the ability of our filters to cleanse the pool water which in turn forces us to close the pools. What if all of the lap lanes are full? We do ask that our members share lap lanes. It is up to the people in the lane if they want to circle swim or just stay on one side of the lane. You may wait for a lane to become free, however that does not mean that someone else will not join you in the lane. Can I swim in the Therapy pool during a class? No, when there is a class in the Therapy pool it is reserved for the members of that class only. Can I swim in the Rec. pool during a class? You may swim in the Recreational pool when there is a class, however you may not swim in the area where the class is being held. I forgot a swim diaper. Can my child wear a regular diaper? In the event that you do not have a swim diaper we can provide one for you. We do not allow regular diapers in either pool for sanitary reasons. I forgot my bathing suit. What can I wear instead? Swim suits are required for hygienic reasons. If you forget a swim suit we ask that you do not swim. May two children take private lessons at the same time with the same instructor? No. Private lessons are one on one (instructor and client). If you have two or more children you can do back to back lessons or we can try to set up lessons with multiple instructors at the same time. Have more questions? Feel free to contact us!
