by Peggy Malvaso Let no one delude himself. If any one of you thinks he is wise in a worldly way, he had better become a fool. In that way he will really be wise, for the wisdom of this world is absurdity with God. Scripture says, “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows how empty are the thoughts of the wise.” 1 Corinthians 3: 18-20 As I hope the readers of Staff Time have noticed over the last 18 months since I have been in the position of Outreach Coordinator, there have been notices about the struggling status of Stephen Ministry in our parish. We have put out the call on several occasions for anyone interested in becoming a Stephen Leader in particular, or a Stephen Minister, to let us know. We have had only one response. According to the Stephen Ministry training manual, “Stephen Ministries is a not-for-profit religious and educational organization based in St. Louis, Missouri.” “The mission of Stephen Ministries St. Louis is to proclaim through word and deed the Gospel of Jesus Christ by nurturing, edifying, educating, and equipping the whole people of God who are called, gifted, and sent to be more effective servants who care for the needs of the whole person.”
The four of us Stephen Ministers who remain here at Holy Name, after many petitions to God for help in this discernment process, have made the decision to discontinue Stephen Ministry in our parish. We do this out of respect for the organization of Stephen Ministries. This wonderful program is structured so that specific requirements must be met in running the program in order to guarantee the best possible outcome for those to whom we minister. Foremost is the need for at least two trained leaders. At this time we have none. Endings are difficult. This is especially hard because Stephen Ministry is such a worthwhile endeavor, and has had a wonderful history of ministering to Holy Name parishioners, and even some folks outside of the Holy Name community. One might ask, “Why would God not grant our request through many sincere, heartfelt prayers, to keep Stephen Ministry alive in our parish?” We, in all our wisdom, know, of course, that the people of our parish need this powerful ministry. Or is it just possible that the above lines of scripture from 1 Corinthians might apply to us? God, in His wisdom, may very well have other, greater plans for us. That is actually a very exciting thought. This is where faith comes in, for us to trust in the Lord, whom we cannot see or hear, except with our hearts, to guide us to just exactly where he wants us to be. Thank you, everyone, who has participated in Stephen Ministry over the years, in whatever capacity it may have been. Your good work has touched many, and brought God’s love to troubled souls. This gift will not end. In God’s Love, Peggy

“How can we know the way?” Jesus shows us the way. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:1-12) How fortunate we are to have Jesus leading the way. Let us pray for listening hearts and the strength to follow wherever Jesus leads us. One aspect of Social Justice which we rarely encounter deals with the imprisoned and HNOJ is blessed to have several members of our community involved in a very special ministry. Sharon & Ken Harrison are part of a team of 23 people from the Rochester Diocese that will be leading a 3-day retreat at Groveland Correctional Facility near Mt. Morris on May 31-June 2. The retreat is for 54 inmates and is called REC which stands for Residents Encounter Christ. They are seeking assistance from our parish community for sewing stoles from white bed sheets. During the retreat each inmate and team member is presented with a stole. The stoles are then autographed as a remembrance of the retreat. All materials will be provided along with specific cutting and sewing instructions. They are seeking 8 parish volunteers for sewing of 10 stoles each which needs to be completed by May 16. Please contact Ken & Sharon at 865-3210 if you can help.

Many thanks to all who made our March chili fest/ luncheon a great success at St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality. The event was tremendous in terms of what we gave as well as what we received. More than 30 Holy Namers participated in one way or another. If you’ve never participated in this event, save the date of May 17th as we will be doing a luncheon then. Contact Janet Frankunas at 865-9437 for details.
