1.Quality of Care ANA STANDARD I

1.1

Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.

Participates in quality of care activities as appropriate to the individual's position, education, and practice environment. Identifies aspects of care important for quality monitoring. Identifies indicators used to monitor quality and effectiveness of nursing care. Participates in the collection of data to monitor quality and effectiveness of nursing care. Formulates recommendations and implements activities in a timely manner to improve the quality of nursing practice. Participates on interdisciplinary teams that evaluate clinical practice or health services. Completes both competency requirements and self-assessment tool annually. Takes actions to achieve goals identified during performance appraisal and/or peer review. Participates in review of peers and support personnel, meeting defined time frames. Provides timely feedback on performance improvement. Seeks experiences to maintain clinical skills, including competency labs and training. Seeks knowledge and skills appropriate to the practice setting and patient base/scope of service by completing Education Modules, videotapes and unit-specific training and education. Provides minimum of two in-services per year. Contributes to an environment that is conducive to: clinical education of students and support personnel; employee orientations: training; proctoring; and clinical practice. Provides/attends unit in-services as designated by position. Knows and is guided by the ANA code for Nurses. Maintains patient confidentiality and privacy. Acts as a patient advocate. Delivers care in a non-judgmental and nondiscriminatory manner; sensitive to the patient's cultural, religious and/or age-specific needs. Delivers care preserving/protecting patient autonomy, dignity, and rights and follows the Patient Bill of Rights. Formulates ethical decisions. Assists the patient to resolve complaints and problems.

Evaluates factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost when two or more options could result in the same patient outcome. Delegates tasks based on patient needs and provider's knowledge and skill. Helps patient and family secure appropriate services to satisfy patient needs.
