Work Experience Pack

Since September 2000, Norden Farm has offered the best in live comedy, family entertainment, drama, music and film. The Centre welcomes up to 2,500 people each week to enjoy live performances alongside our alongside our weekly programme of classes and workshops, exhibitions in our Gallery, Norden’s Restaurant and Café Bar. Some of Norden Farm’s facilities: The Courtyard Theatre is used to mount a huge range of performance activities, both by professional companies, local arts groups and young performers through our programme of participatory workshops. It is also equipped with high quality 35mm film projection, which enables our regular programme of film screenings to take place. The Studio, Norden Farm's second performance space, has a maximum capacity of 100, and like the Theatre hosts a wide range of performance by local and incoming groups. Particular features of the Studio programme include regular folk music events, our 'Live Literature' programme of readings and discussions with published writers and regular theatre shows for children. The Gallery features exhibitions of both two and three dimensional contemporary art, in particular work by artists based in the area, both amateur and professional. The Long Barn is a multi-purpose space which holds up to 80 people and benefits from its unique setting in our 18th century long barn. The timber framed barn offers an unusual and interesting environment for activities, and is used for youth activities, business meetings, training and receptions and occasional concerts, as well as visual arts classes and workshops.

Work Experience Placements Norden Farm has a strong commitment to encouraging young people to become involved in the arts, and we do have an active work experience policy. Placements are usually for one week and we can offer students experience with Front of House, Box Office, Marketing and Administration, and Technical. However, it is possible to spend a placement in one particular department if preferred. Whilst most work experience placements are for secondary school students, we also welcome applications from students in further or higher education, or from recent graduates seeking longer term voluntary placements. We believe that if work experience is to be delivered properly, it does require a significant amount of staff time and consequently we do have to limit the number of placements we offer per year. Applications for a Work Experience Placement should be made by the student on the attached application form. We do not require an interview, but your application should state why you

would like a placement at Norden Farm, what you hope to gain from such a placement, and what interest you have in the arts. What to Expect from a Work Experience Placement at Norden Farm Before your placement at Norden Farm, the Events Manager will put together a timetable for the week. This will vary from placement to placement, and will be designed to ensure that maximum experience is gained. Your timetable can be structured according to your interests, although this does depend on what is taking place at Norden Farm during your placement week. During your placement you can usually expect: 1. The opportunity to gain a broad understanding of how the departments within a busy arts centre work together. In particular:      2. Technical (lighting and sound) Marketing Box Office Front of House Administration

The opportunity to have ‘hands on’ involvement with events at the Centre, supporting the venue’s technicians with get-in/get-out and technical preparation, performances/screenings, and building maintenance. The opportunity to work with the Duty Manager for an evening performance. This could involve stewarding, selling programmes and/or ice creams, assisting the public and helping to prepare the Centre for events the following day. Participation in direct mailing campaigns and print distribution. An introduction to the computerised box office system, with the opportunity to carry out some box office tasks.

4. 5.

Please note that as Norden Farm does not produce its own work, we are unable to offer placements in stage management, wardrobe, make up, set design or performance.

Working for Us Following their placement, we ask all work experience participants to help us by acting as an ambassador for the Centre and its activities. This can involve receiving information from us about forthcoming events, circulating information to friends, peers and teachers and generally promoting Norden Farm within school/college.

Working Times Students on work experience placements can normally expect to work a 30 hour week. Because of the nature of our business, some hours will be worked in the evening. Occasionally a long day is scheduled, but this is so students can see a show in from get-in in the morning, technical preparation and rehearsal, performance and get-out.

Box Office Parents and friends are encouraged to come along and watch performances with which work experience students are involved. Tickets can be booked through our Box Office on 01628 788997. Catering You will have the opportunity to take a meal break during your sessions with us so you might like to bring a packed lunch with you, or alternatively you could buy something from our Café Bar. Please note, however, that the Café Bar is not open on Mondays. If you prefer to go home/elsewhere for your meal break, please let someone know that you are leaving.

Heath & Safety Information regarding health and safety will be sent to work experience students with the timetable for their placement week.
