What is Eyeplan?
Simply put, Eyeplan is a fantastic way of looking after your eyes and receiving great value from your local independent optician. In exchange for a small monthly fee the eyeplan members receives a number of different benefits. There are Eyeplan schemes that take care of members whatever stage of life they are at or whether they prefer contact lenses, glasses or both. The Benefits The benefits of Eyeplan are based around the Eyeplan core values; care, quality and value:
      Free eye examinations Eye Examinations as frequently as a member wishes No loss of NHS entitlement Significant reductions on eye wear and accessories Accidental Damage Cover for spectacles bought with Eyeplan Discounted family members

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD) This occurs when the cells of the macula (the area of the retina responsible for your central vision) degenerate and cause loss of vision. This leads to problems being encountered in everyday life such as reading, writing and in severe cases driving. Research carried out so far has shown that a healthy balanced diet may slow the progress of the disease and more importantly it may delay or prevent onset of this disease. A study carried out in the USA showed that people who ate vegetables rich in LUTEIN and ZEAXANTHIN lowered the risk of developing AMD by 43%. LUTEIN and ZEAXANTHIN exist mainly in green vegetables such as spinach, cabbage and broccoli. The risk factors include: Age (above 40), Gender – Women more prone to disease, Diet and nutrition, Sunlight – light coloured eyes more prone to damage, Smoking, Heart Disease, Hereditary – Family History all contribute to this condition. ONCE AMD DEVELOPS THERE IS NO CURE – SO PREVENTION IS THE BEST MEDICINE! It has been suggested that modification to your diet to increase levels of LUTEIN and ZEAXANTHIN may lower the risk of developing AMD. Nutritional supplements are available for those who feel they are at risk from the disease or indeed already suffer form it. ICaps is one of these supplements that provide the anti-oxidants, multivitamins and minerals the eye needs to stay healthy. Available at the practice if required.
