Air puff test blown away Many patients have commented over the years that the one test they dislike is the air puff test, which is one of the glaucoma tests. The i-care tonometer is a new accurate and safe alternative to this test and this is pictured below. We have recently bought two of these tonometers, one for downstairs and one for upstairs. We have also purchased a state-ofthe art new camera which allows us to take high resolution (10 megapixel) photographs of the retina. Over the last two years we have invested in a leading computer software package, which means that we can access your records from any computer in the practice. But don’t worry, the computers are all password protected and regularly backed-up!

Number 1

Supporting us supporting you

We recently had a record month for new patients, with nearly 100 new patients joining the practice. This is despite the fact that we have had a ‘no advertising’ policy for over 12 years. This is because we believe that new patients should be attracted to a practice through the practice’s reputation for what it does, not for what it claims to do. Nearly all our new patients are the result of recommendations from existing patients, doctors, or other optometrists. So thank you to all those patients who recommend us to their friends, family, and colleagues. Your support helps the practice to continue to grow, meaning that we can invest even more in equipment and services. Staff news Professor Bruce Evans has worked at the practice for over 20 years and has owned the practice for the last 12 years. He is also Director of Research at the Institute of Optometry and has recently been appointed as a Governor of Brentwood School. Miss Louise Gow, after 10 years of commuting from Kent, has reduced her clinics to two days a week. She is also Lead Clinician at the Institute of Optometry. In view of her MSc in Clinical Optometry and long service to the practice Miss Gow has been promoted to Senior Optometrist. Dr Sonal Rughani is one of the few UK optometrists to hold the highly respected American optometric qualification as well as the British qualification. Dr Rughani works at the practice one day a week and also at the Institute of Optometry and Moorfields Eye Hospital. Mr Simon Harris has left the practice and we wish him well in his new project in Hertfordshire. Mr

Harris’ patients are being cared for Miss Anita Shah and Mr Lewis Marshall. Miss Shah has also worked at Moorfields Eye Hospital and is just completing an MSc in Clinical Optometry, a qualification held by only a few optometrists. Mr Lewis Marshall joined the practice in 2007 as pre-reg optometrist. He was head-hunted by Professor Evans whilst still at University, where Lewis had a reputation as one of brightest of the new generation of optometrists. He gained a first class honours degree and won two prizes in his final year. Jenny Powell has been caring for our more challenging spectacle dispensings for many years. Jenny has recently been appointed as an examiner for the professional exams held by the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. The newest member of our dispensing team, Janine Dames, recently gained excellent results in some dispensing examinations. Preparing for the eye exam Your reminder letter is on the reverse of this newsletter. Patients often ask about preparation for their eye examination, and here are a few things that you could bring:  Any spectacles or contact lenses that you currently wear  If you are on benefits, proof of your entitlement  A list of any medications  Details of eye diseases in the family  A note of the distance from the eye to where you hold a book  A note of the distance from the eye to your computer screen.  If you are attending for a contact lens check then please wear the contact lenses to the appointment.

Frames for all An advantage of being an independent practice is that we are not restricted to a limited range of suppliers and we now stock a very wide range of designer frames including: Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Calvin Klein (CK), DKNY, Flexon, Nike, Silhouette, Lulu Guiness, Oscar+Fitch, Morgan, Coco-Song. In addition to these designer labels, we also provide inclusive glasses including frames and lenses from £45.
