Interlude Exponents Vital Vocabulary exponents-The superscript of a number which shows how many times the base is to be multiplied. Exponents are easy too. 5 3 exponent Base The base tells you what number you will multiply. The exponent tells you how many you will need. So with 53 you will multiply the number 5 and you will need three of them. equal PAUSE For a minute and remember this. 53 does NOT 5 X 3. Do not get it twisted. (This mistake trips up a lot of people so be careful.) 5 =5 X 5 X 5 25 X 5 125 3 Look at this: 2 4 4 The number that you will multiply is 2 and you will need four of them. So when you break it down it looks a little something like this: 2 =2X2X2X2 4X2X2 8X2 16 Try this one and don’t get scared. 100 0 0 Yes it looks ugly but it’s the easiest one of all. Any number raised to the zero power equals one. So… 100 = 1 Too 2 Easy. PAUSE Just remember that the base tells you what number you use to n use to multiply with and the exponent tells you how many. Now show what you know.
