BASIC ELEMENTS
Although the order may vary, your resume should include the following information: ♦ Name, address (with zip), phone number, email address (good example: studentab@eckerd.edu. Bad example: partyguy88@aol.com) ♦ Summary of Qualifications (list 3-4 of your best skills or qualities) ♦ Education (honors, awards, class standing, don’t list high school information) ♦ Co-Curricular Activities (including volunteer work) ♦ Languages & Special Skills/Interests ♦ Employment (full-time, part-time, summer, and internships)
Important Things to Remember:
Consider providing a summary of qualifications and/or objective. Specify three or four skills that match the employer’s needs. These highlights can appear in a short paragraph or quick “bullet” format. List accomplishments, not just responsibilities. Determine your résumés length based on accomplishments. An experienced candidate often has enough relevant accomplishments to expand his or her resume to a second page. However, be sure the information you put on your resume is conducive to what the employer is looking for. Be sure to specifically follow the directions on the job description. If it says to submit a one page resume, make sure that’s what you’re submitting. Tailor each resume to include the accomplishments that relate to the particular employers’ needs. Careless typos, grammatical errors and misspelled words are INEXCUSABLE. Have at least two people you trust proof read your resume. Your computer has spell check for a reason – use it!

DIFFERENT RESUME STYLES
There are five different types of resumes. The following pages will list and explain each style. Remember, the counselors at Career Resources are happy to help you pick which type is right for you. They are:
• • • • •
Chronological Resume Functional Resume Combination Resume Curriculum Vitae (CV) International Resume
4
CHRONOLOGICAL RESUME
A chronological resume starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current or most recent job first. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it's easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them. This type of resume works well for job seekers with a strong, solid work history. In using this format, the main body of the document becomes the Professional Experience section, starting from the most recent experience going chronologically backwards through a succession of previous experience. This resume works to build credibility through experience gained, while illustrating career growth over time. The outline for a chronological resume will generally follow this type of pattern: • Name and Address Header (include your name, address, phone number and email address) • Opening Headline, Objective or Occupational Title • A brief Summary of Qualifications • Professional Experience as main body of the document • Education and specific Computer, Software or Equipment Skills or Training Borrowed from: http://www.resume-resource.com/format.html
5
THE FUNCTIONAL RESUME
A functional resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history (meaning they haven’t worked for an extended period of time). The functional resume format is one that is used to assert a focus to relevant skills that are specific to the type of position being sought. This format directly emphasizes specific professional capabilities and utilizes experience summaries as its primary means of communicating professional competency. In contrast, the chronological resume format will briefly highlight these competencies prior to presenting a comprehensive timeline of career growth via reverse-chronological listing with most recent experience listed first. The outline for a functional resume will generally follow this type of pattern: • Name and Address Header • Objective or Summary of Qualifications • Experience Highlights • Work/Employment History • Education and specific Computer, Software or Equipment Skills or Training
Please note: The Functional Resume is not a recommended format to use. Please see a Career Counselor for further explanation.

6
COMBINATION RESUME
A combination resume combines elements of the Chronological and Functional Resumes. A combination resume lists your skills and experience first. Your employment history is listed next. With this type of resume you can highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and also provide the chronological work history that employers prefer. Combination resumes are used by candidates to highlight special accomplishments while giving employment history in chronological order. The major categories are: • Summary • Accomplishments • Experience • Education • Skills Other categories can be: • Professional Objectives • Professional Memberships • Honors • Certifications

CURRICULUM VITAE (CV)
What is a Curriculum Vitae (CV) ? A CV is a longer (two or more pages), more detailed synopsis of your background and skills. A CV includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. As with a resume, you may need different versions of a CV for different types of positions. When to Use a Curriculum Vitae: When should job seekers use a curriculum vitae, commonly referred to as CV, rather than a resume? In the United States, a CV is used primarily when applying for academic, education, scientific or research positions. It is also applicable when applying for fellowships or grants. When asking for a job in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, expect to submit a CV rather than a resume. Keep in mind that overseas employers often expect to read the type of personal information on a curriculum vitae that would never be included on an American resume, such as date of birth, nationality and place of birth. United States law on what information job applicants can be asked to provide does not apply outside the country.
Contact information -Include your name, address, phone, and e-mail for home and school or work, if applicable. Education - Indicate your major, type of degree, and the date each degree was awarded for each postsecondary school attended. If you haven't yet completed your degree, indicate the expected graduation date. Honors and Awards - List each award, granting institution and the date awarded. Teaching Experience - List any courses that you assisted with as a TA, co-taught, or taught. Note the institution, role held in each, and supervisor. Research Experience - List assistantships, practical and other research experience. Include the institution, nature of the position, duties, dates, and supervisor. Statistical and Computer Experience - List courses that you've taken, statistical and computer programs with which you're familiar, and data analysis techniques with which you're competent. Professional Experience - List relevant professional experience such as administrative work and summer jobs. Grants Awarded - Include title of agency, projects for which funds were awarded, and dollar amounts. Publications - Separate publications into sections for articles, reports, and other documents. Conference Presentations - Separate this category into sections for posters and papers. Professional Activities - List service activities, committee memberships, administrative work, lectures, professional workshops you've delivered or attended, editorial activities, and any other professional activities. Professional Affiliations - List any professional societies with which you're affiliated. Research Interests - Briefly summarize your research interests with four to six key descriptors. This is best added during graduate school than before. Teaching Interests - List courses you're prepared to teach or would like the opportunity to teach. References - Provide names, phone numbers, addresses, and e-mail addresses for your referees. Ask their permission beforehand. Be sure that they will speak highly of you. Information NOT to include An otherwise well-constructed CV can quickly become a liability for you if it includes irrelevant information. Generally, the following information should be excluded. • Age 8
A CV might include:
• • • • • • • • •
Ethnic identity Political affiliation Religious preference Hobbies Marital status Sexual orientation Place of birth Photographs Height, weight, health
There are possible exceptions to these exclusions. For instance, if you are applying to a sectarian institution, then your religious preference may be relevant. Even in such a situation, it is probably better to omit the information and allow the institution to ask this information in person. Present items chronologically within each category of the CV, with the most recent items first. Your CV is a statement of your accomplishments, and most importantly, is a work in progress. Update it frequently and you’ll find that taking pride in your accomplishments can be a source of motivation.
9
INTERNATIONAL RESUME
An international resume is similar to a CV in the sense that it is often multiple pages and includes more detailed information. Sometimes, international employers will ask for a CV rather than a resume. When applying for an international job or internship, you may need to re-format your resume. Each country has different etiquette with regards to applying for a particular job or internship. In some countries your resume wouldn’t need to be accompanied by a cover letter or a photo, while in other countries it would. International resumes differ from domestic resumes because international employers place more emphasis on your personality. They want to know that you will succeed in an international work environment. Things to keep in mind when writing an international resume: First, you have to build a resume that shows your personality and is organized to match the employer’s ideal profile. Second, you need to emphasize your cross-cultural skills, especially in terms of the cross-cultural work environment. Lastly, there are a host of smaller details that are unique to international resumes such as language and travel descriptions. You might need to list citizenship or other personal information such as marital status. www.workingoverseas.com

Student Speaker for Board of Trustees- Chosen by the Dean of Students to speak to the Eckerd College Board of Trustees on student life and community on campus- a panel of four students were chosen to talk freely about issues that matter on campus and how a college can be an academic institute as well as a community at the same time through proper leadership and support.
LEADERSHIP
Circle K President – Voted by Eckerd College Circle K as President of the club for the academic years 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. Duties include organizing and planning community service events for the year such as Miracle League, UNICEF collection, and The Giving Tree. One of the main goals is to complete a community service project every month around the community. • Director of Palmetto Productions- As director of the student activities board events, comedy and novelty, concerts, cultural events, and off campus outings that involve ticket sales. 2007-2008 • Activator- As part of Eckerd College’s Autumn Term for freshmen, upperclassmen are chosen to act as leaders for the newcomers to college. Activators organize and run events planned for the freshmen throughout Autumn Term, which runs throughout August. Events include fishing, beach days, picnics, late night volleyball, karaoke, and game nights, and much more. These leaders serve not only as event staff and planners but also as peer mentors to the freshmen incase of any uneasiness, homesickness, or concerns about college life. 2005-2006 •
VOLUNTEER WORK
• Miracle League “Angel in the Outfield”- Every Saturday morning volunteers act as Angels in the Outfield working with this magnificent program known as The Miracle League. This league allows children who are confined to wheelchairs or walkers along with disabled children of all sorts to run the bases on the rubber made field. These are children who were told at one time they would never be able to play baseball like any other child but every Saturday for two hours their disabilities, doctors’ visits, and problems disappear and the smiles take over as they hit, run and score. 2006- Present Ronald McDonald House Volunteer- Once a month students and club members of Circle K help the sponsoring Kiwanis club feed families at the local Ronald McDonald House to families who have children in the All Children’s Hospital. The goal is to give them a break, a hot meal, and a smile to hopefully make them feel better about their situations. 2005- Present 20
•
Norah Jones, Page 3 Trick-or Treat for UNICEF- Every Halloween members of Circle K knock on dorm doors and local places for the UNICEF foundation, which helps children in Kenya who have to live with HIV. 20042007 The Giving Tree- The Eckerd College Circle K club decided to raise money to help children who were less fortunate than most and help make their wish lists come true. As a group, they collected enough money to donate socks, underwear, clothes, and toys that their families could not afford to buy for them. The most rewarding part of the project however, was being able to deliver the gifts and see the smiles on the children’s faces. 2006 YMCA After School Volunteer- Lead a group of students to a local YMCA where everyone helped children from grades Kindergarten through Eighth grade with their homework, games, and questions. Many of the children at the after school programs are from low income families where some of their parents have been placed in jail or are no longer around leaving them no role models. We as students try to be positive role models to these children and let them know that education really is key and will take them on the right path in life. 2006 St. Pete Free Clinic- As a service project with the Dean of Students, a group of Eckerd students spent some time at the St. Pete Free clinic where health care is provided for free and there is no fee for a doctor if one cannot afford it. Students worked in the food pantry where they sorted food for the satellite shelters located throughout the city. The mission statement for this organization is: “ The St.Petersburg Free Clinic is a caring organization helping to meet basic, unserved human needs through resources, volunteers, and advocacy.” 2006 Dictionary Drive- The members of Circle K got together and collected money for the local YMCA for the after school program. Many of these children did not even know what a dictionary was, let alone ever see or touch one in their lifetime. With the help of the Eckerd College Community the club was able to donate dictionaries for children to use. 2005 Stuffed Animal Toy Drive- As a member of Circle K, lead a group of students to put together a toy drive for a local charity. Faculty, staff, and the student body were asked to donate gently used or newly bought stuffed animals for local children who were not as fortunate as others in the area. Everyone joined hands on our small campus and helped many local children have a very Merry Christmas. 2004
