Bringing neighbors and communities together.
Christmas is a time for giving at First Christian Church.
Last year during the Christmas holiday, the community of believers at First Christian Church began asking some hard questions: “What if we did Christmas differently this year? What if we tried to understand w h a t it really meant for the Son of God to come into our world? What if we could peel back the layers of consumerism and materialism that have come to define the Christmas season in America, and focus on the One who was rich, yet for our sakes became poor, so that through his poverty we might become rich? What if instead of going into debt and buying people junk that they don’t want and won’t remember by next March, we gave them a relational gift; we continued on next page...

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...” at Common Goods!
The Common Goods Ministry is growing and growing and growing! In October, we helped more than 600 families with clothing. We are collecting good, clean, working toys for Christmas gifts. We allow parents to pick one gift item for each of their children during the month of December. Other items which are quite helpful this month are new socks and underwear, $25 gift cards, gloves, hats, mittens, and fleece blankets. Our schedule has expanded to 3 days a week to include: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (11am-2pm) and

Continued from Christmas... gave them ourselves? What if we took some of that money that we saved by not buying into the consumeristic Christmas empire and gave it away to those who need, not just presents under their tree, but food on their tables and heat in their homes and coats for their children for the winter?”
Answering those questions led many of us to celebrate Christmas in new, personal and meaningful ways last year. As we roll into a new Christmas season those questions are still relevant, maybe even more so because of our nation’s erratic economy. We all still need to spend less, avoid consumer debt, while helping those in need and letting the coming of Christ be central in our celebrations. This year we want to focus our special Christmas giving efforts as a church family on the country of Haiti. Our church has two significant mission partners in Haiti: Lifeline Christian Mission and Sonlight Christian Academy. Both of these worthy organizations have significant needs in their ministries, especially after the destruction left behind by this past summer’s hurricanes. Sonlight Academy needs to replace its generator which supplies power to its entire operation. First Christian Church is partnering with a couple of other congregations to provide this generator. You can support this effort by buying a “light bulb” in memory or in honor of a loved one for $10 per bulb. We will have a “light bulb” tree in the lobby of FCC beginning December 7 to display the bulbs purchased by those who participate. Lifeline Christian Mission needs medical supplies. As well, we will be collecting medical items to help their mission in Haiti. A special delivery will be sent of the supplies we collect after the first of the year. Last year over $25,000 was given to special projects during the month of December that helped build water wells and provide for children in Africa. This year we want to provide at least that amount to alleviate some of the suffering in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. You can make a difference this year and not only will the receiver of your generosity be helped, you will be blessed and changed as you care about what God cares about this Christmas season.

Continued from Common Goods... donations may be brought to the Common Goods building during open hours or put in a secured plastic bag and dropped in our donation shed. Please make sure your donations are clean and in wearable condition. Our food ministry began collecting food for nearly 300 families right after Thanksgiving. Donations included dry and canned goods, as well as Angel Food unit purchases to help local f a m i l i e s struggling to make ends meet. Donations will be distributed just in time to bring joy for the holiday season. As in the past, we have again taken applications to adopt families for Christmas. Charitable families, businesses, and numerous First Christian LifeGroups enjoy adopting an entire family and purchasing gifts for them. The families who were assisted with Christmas celebrations have always been so grateful that such generous people are willing to make a difference in their families. This year, our gifts will be distributed on December 20th to put a little holiday cheer under their trees.
