Doug White: Rotary’s New President
“You’ve got to hire Doug White,” my staff member implored in the fall of 1991. “But, he’s had no fund-raising experience,” I countered. He’s a communications guy for UCLA’s business school. How do you know he can ask someone for money?” That was my first introduction to Douglas Alan White, the Rotary Club’s incoming president. My staff prevailed, and the Springfield, Missouri native proved to be the best hire we made in Texas Christian University’s first national comprehensive campaign. Doug began as our Director of Corporations and Foundations and we then promoted him to running our whole major gifts operation, including planned giving. In addition, he managed the critical campaign segment in Fort Worth. His double major in journalism and advertising/public relations from the University of Tulsa proved
Doug White

to be no impediment to success in fund raising. Doug wears well with people. The more you see him, the more you like him. And, he has a gentle persistence that is important for a fund raiser. Doug is also a gifted manager who makes things happen. Most essential, he has a crackling wit and a wonderful perspective. He doesn’t take himself too seriously. (And, that’s why I would hazard a prediction that he will be one of the Club’s top presidents.) This is not to say Doug has never made a mistake. I argued against his leaving TCU for a job as Associate Dean for External Affairs with the University of North Carolina’s School of Public Health. I just thought he could do a lot better, but I figured he took it because of the Tar Heel mys-

tique and fatigue at Tulsa’s continually being a bridesmaid in basketball. He raised the largest gift the UNC School of Public Health ever received, but after two years he brought his career back to Fort Worth where his talents were better appreciated. Harris Methodist Health Foundation grabbed him for their vice president and chief operating officer position. In 2004 he became its president where he sits today, managing a public foundation with $52 million in assets and a staff of 19. The only road he wistfully didn’t take was that of a major league pitcher, a job he dreamed about when playing for the Springdale Arkansas American Legion team. The scouts didn’t call so he accepted Tulsa’s full scholarship offer and became part of their University Scholars Program. It was there he met his wife, Brooke, who is an accomplished CPA in the insurance field. They have one son, Clarke, who like his Dad, has a mean fast ball. He pitches for the Trinity Valley Trojans. And, today he gets to watch his father take the mound again, pitching for the Downtown Rotary Club. ~ Bronson Davis,

Meeting Cancelled - July 4, 2008

Last Meeting
Outgoing President Fernando received the most jabs, however, especially for winning his own Rotary quiz, called “Fernando’s Fourteen.” According to the emcees, a grand total of three Rotarians participated! All baby boomers had the opportunity to “feel the love” as the audience was enlisted to sing along with a parodied version of 70’s group ABBA’s “Fernando” in saying “farewell” to our outgoing leader. The serenade was complete with cellphones, lighters, or anything else that anyone could wave in the air to add to the sentimental rock concert mood. Our 97th President, Doug White, accepted his new position by admitting that he felt a “little dorky” in his nice new clothes, and expressed the hope that members would find gratification in the year ahead.

President Fernando started the “Annual Roast” meeting by suspending the “4-way test,” as J. R. Labbe, Wayne Carson, and Gary Cumbie took the podium and began to dismantle all confidence of presenters over the past year. Fair warning was given with this quote: “If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re missing the funniest part of life!”

No one seemed immune from the Jimmy Burnett delivered the invowitty assessments of the three emcation, Deb Baker led the National cees, as they demonstrated a “Pimp My Bobblehead” version of the Fort Anthem, and Mike Baylor introduced Worth Cats’ Mike Moncrief doll, to visiting Rotarians and guests. awarding new City Manager Dale Fisseler kudos for his retort about a dead carp he “might” have saved. ~ Sherry Matina, Gary Cumbie was reminded of his Fort Worth Association of Realtors Spelling Bee victory with the word “unanimity,” while Bob Mitchell was chided for being saluted in place of the American flag at a memorable meeting.
