COBIS
COUNCIL OF BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS
COBIS is a Membership Association of high-quality British international schools worldwide, with member schools and affiliates
in more than 35 countries. COBIS members undergo an inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) to gain
accreditation.
COBIS provides:
Quality assurance.
Representation with the British Government, educational bodies, and the corporate sector.
A network of support through contacts, consultancies, information and marketing.
A forum for discussion through conferences, seminars, and continuing professional development.
Access to information about developments and trends in UK education.
COBIS holds an Annual Conference in London in May for Heads, Governors, and members of school Senior Leadership
Teams. The Association also runs inset conferences for teachers at different international venues. COBIS aims to support its
members and represent their interests in Britain and overseas in order to advance the interests of British schools outside the UK.
COBIS was founded in 1981 as COBISEC (Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities) and is a
Charitable Association registered in The Hague. The Association is managed by an elected Executive Committee which includes
both Heads and Governors. In 2000 the Association became affiliated to the Independent Schools Council (ISC) in the UK, and
adopted the ISI inspection scheme as the route to full accreditation for its members. In 2008 COBIS became a constituent
member association of the ISC. The work of COBIS is supported by a UK Secretariat.
