Principal’s Message:
Welcome to the 2009-10 school year at MSJE! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. Teachers have been returning looking rested and full of enthusiasm for the new year. There are many changes this year due to the budget cuts. Class sizes have changed in Kinder and grades 4-6. Prep time for the teachers (specialist time for the students) has been cut. There are new staff members due to the loss of our two temporary teachers. All of these changes are detailed below, but I want to assure you that the same quality educational program will be in place at MSJE! Staff, as well as myself, are committed to that goal. We look forward to welcoming the students on Wed. Sept. 2nd. THIS IS THE ONLY PAPER NEWSLETTER YOU WILL RECEIVE. ALL FUTURE NEWSLETTERS WILL ONLY BE ONLINE AT www.fremont.us.ca/msje. 2008-09 CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS: Class lists will be posted on Tuesday, September 1st at 4:30 on the windows of Room 1 (except for Kindergarten). FUSD Attendance Guidelines for the First Week of School: Board Policy 5113.1 “Students are expected to be in school the first day of the school year. Students who have not attended the first two days of school will be dropped at the end of the third day of school, except in cases of illness for which the school has been previously informed. In cases of illness, parents/guardians must contact the school each day the child is absent.” Seats will not be held for students on extended vacations or other optional activities, whether or not the school is notified. If a student is dropped, his or her seat may be assigned to another student. If the student subsequently reports to school, he or she will be required to register as a new student. Elementary students whose seats are reassigned may be overloaded to other schools if they report to school later. Secondary students may be dropped from their scheduled classes. Attendance and Tardies: Daily attendance and being on time are crucial factors in how successful children are in school. You are helping your children to set lifelong patterns when you prioritize their attendance in school and their arrival on time. Tardies interfere with instruction in the classroom, both in terms of the time the student is missing from the classroom and the disruption the student causes when he/she arrives. Education Code 48260.5 has strict guidelines for families to follow when truancy (absences) or tardies are a concern. Please help us to help your child learn responsible work habits by getting them to school on time every day. Supervision is available on the playground by the staff for all students at 8:15 a.m. All students arriving before 8:15 will need to wait by the gate or the office until the bell rings allowing them to go to the playground. After School Band: Attention all 4th, 5th & 6th graders! Join the Band Join our After-School Band this year and learn how to play a band instrument – flute, trumpet, tuba, drums, bells, trombone, clarinet, baritone, oboe, French horn. No experience necessary, just a desire to play a musical instrument. Our FUSD Band Instructors will bring the kids from their first note to playing in a concert in the Spring. Classes meet once a week after-school right here on campus. View class schedule now at www.fremonteducation.org Registration begins on the first day of school, September 2nd, online at www.fremont-education.org or through the mail; look for your registration flier to come home on the first day of school. Costs: $10 non-refundable registration fee, plus donation or volunteer time. A limited number of scholarships and loaner instruments are available to qualifying families. For information go to the FEF website at www.fremont-education.org. School Lunches - $2.50 Checks are made payable to MSJE Child Nutrition Services. Beginning the first day of school, children should either bring their own lunch from home or money to purchase a school lunch. Hot lunches, including milk, are available for $2.50. For children bringing their lunch, milk may be purchased separately for $.50. Applications for free and reduced are available in the office or on the FUSD WEB Site: www.fremont.k12.ca.us. Fremont Unified School District Parent/Guardian & Student Handbook Students will bring home Parent/Guardian-Student Handbooks during the first days of school. Please review it with your child and sign and return the last page. Students will also receive a Mission San Jose Elementary Student Handbook. Please review it with your child also. Emergency Cards Emergency cards will be sent home on the first day of school. They are vital to each child’s safety at our school. Please complete both sides of the card for each child attending, printing phone numbers and other

information clearly. Send cards to school no later than Friday, September 4, so that they may be filed in the office for immediate reference. Cards will be returned to you if they are not signed or if emergency numbers are not listed or legible. Remember, the school may only release a student to parents or an authorized person you specify on the Emergency Card. Back to School Night: Mark your calendars: Tuesday, September 15th at 7:00 will be our Back to School Night where teachers explain their grade level’s program to parents. This is a parent only event. More information will be coming home at a later date. PARKING AND STUDENT DROP OFF: The parking lot is open to the following people: 1. Kindergarten parents dropping off their child. 2. Large day care operations picking up more than 2 students; i.e. Best Friends, Achievers, Fast Track, etc. 3. Parents picking up and dropping off students at Adventure Time. ALL OTHER STUDENTS SHOULD BE DROPPED OFF AND PICKED UP ON BRYANT STREET. Kindergarten parents and day care providers will be given passes for the parking lot. All other cars will not be allowed in the parking lot to pick up or drop off students. 1. DO NOT BLOCK DRIVEWAYS OF OUR NEIGHBORS. 2. DO NOT MAKE U-TURNS ON BRYANT STREET after you have picked up your child. Drive to the intersection and turn. 3. DO NOT JAYWALK ON BRYANT STREET. Cross at the corners. 4. If you choose to walk your child in, do not walk through the parking lot. Use the sidewalks. 5. Do not stop/park in the red zones. Red curbs mean no parking or stopping. 6. Do not double park. 7. On Bryant Street, stay in one line. Drive forward as the line moves. We will continue to have Safety Patrol on duty on Bryant Street. Knowing the dedication of our parents, I am sure we will also have parents who continue to volunteer to help us out at drop off and dismissal time each day. The more parents the better, so if you have any time to spare at 8:15 or 3:00, please consider helping us out. PLEASE be courteous to our volunteers and follow their directions. THESE PROCEDURES ARE IN PLACE TO KEEP ALL STUDENTS SAFE. Unfortunately the parking lot is not large enough to accommodate the cars of all 670 students in our school. I encourage you to create car pools for pick up and drop off on Bryant Street. We thank you for your cooperation in regards to this matter.
