Beaconsfield Figure Skating Club CanSkate Program Information
(Please retain these sheets for your records)
CanSkate is a “learn-to-skate” program for boys and girls. This program teaches the fundamentals of skating (go forwards, go backwards, turn, stop, jump) in a group lesson environment. We maintain a ratio of 10 skaters to 1 Skate Canada coach. The CanSkate program is divided into 7 stages (badges). Each child is different and will learn the skills necessary for each of these badges at his/her own pace. During the CanSkate lessons it is possible that more than one group might be working on the same badge or skill level. If your child switches groups, it does not necessarily mean they have changed levels. Sometimes skaters are moved to put children together who skate at similar speeds. This avoids skaters waiting at the boards for slower ones and prevents discouragement of a child who skates slower. Two different groups can be working on the same badge and can pass the badge at the same rate. Please explain this to your child. Many children think that any time they switch groups they have gone up (or down) a badge level. There are no formal “test days” for CanSkate. Our coaches continuously evaluate your child during the lessons. As soon as they are ready to pass a level, they will be given their badge. CANSKATE DATES AND TIMES: Monday: Friday:

EQUIPMENT ADVICE
SKATES: Either hockey or figure skates can be worn to CanSkate - Sharpen skates after app. 20-24 hours of use, or if dull, rough to the touch or rusted. - Do not have toe picks removed from figure skates. They are needed! - Do not let your child walk on hard surfaces while wearing their skates. It dulls the blade. They should wear skate guards. - Wipe blades dry after use with a towel. Store skates with soft skate covers. Remove skate guards during storage because if they are left on it will cause rusting. - Make sure skate laces are the proper length. Conceal long laces (tuck them away). - If you have any concerns about your child’s equipment please talk to any of the professional coaches. When buying skates, look for a pair that offers good ankle support. Your child must be able to stand and walk in the skates without their ankles turning inwards. Progress will be slower with soft boots. Make sure that the toe picks are still intact if buying second hand skates. Avoid molded boots with buckle or Velcro fasteners, Softec boots with Velcro fasteners, Jackson “Glacier” and any vinyl figure skate. SKATE SHARPENING A poor quality skate sharpening can permanently damage the blade by removing the blade’s rocker or toe picks. This seriously diminishes the resale value of the skate as well as making it harder on the skater to learn new skills. It is worth the trip to have a good sharpening done! Blades should be sharpened after approximately 24 hours of skating time. RECOMMENDED PLACES TO PURCHASE SKATES OR HAVE SKATES SHARPENED: Good quality new skates can be purchased at all of the flowing locations (excluding Dave Pitman) FIGURE SKATES: Dave Pitman, (Dollard), 953-3584 call for an appointment L’Artiste du Patin, 7825 Taschereau Blvd. Brossard, (450) 678-5442 Boutique H&L, 826 Décarie, Saint-Laurent, (514) 744-2016 La Maison du Patin, 9371 Meaux, St-Leonard, 324-2662 Boutique Patinage Plus Inc., 3760 boulevard de la Concorde E, Laval, 450-661-6655 HOCKEY SKATES: Beaconsfield Arena (Sharpening only) Skating Attire: All types of skating attire may be purchased at the following locations: L’Artiste du Patin, 7825 Taschereau Blvd. Brossard, (450) 678-5442 Boutique H&L, 826 Décarie, Saint-Laurent, (514) 744-2016 La Maison du Patin, 9371 Meaux, St-Leonard, 324-2662 Boutique de Dance Wendy, 295A boulevard St-Jean, Pointe-Claire, 514-695-0285 Boutique Patinage Plus Inc., 3760 boulevard de la Concorde E, Laval, 450-661-6655 K.
