Who Will Send My Christmas Card?
Well, it’s here again. Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays. The cards are already arriving in the mail. (Thanks. I enjoy opening every one of them). Cards that bring Christmas cheer. “Tis the season to be jolly!” Right? Well, maybe for some, but not for all. Take, for example, my friends Joe and Leeta Dover. Joe was my preacher when I was a kid. Joe and my uncle Cecil took turns preaching for our little country church. Joe was also my football coach. He helped my dad coach when I played little-league football. Joe and Leeta have been life-long friends. Joe and Leeta are also the recipients of my one Christmas card each year. For the past 20 years, Sandra and I have had the tradition of sending only one card at Christmas. To whom? Joe and Leeta Dover. But not this year. My one Christmas card will not be sent. Maybe next year, but not this year. About a week ago, Joe and Leeta’s only child, Emily, was killed in a plane crash. Emily, age 28, was a pilot. An excellent pilot. A superb flight instructor. Emily loved to fly. She took after her dad. Emily’s dad, Joe, got his pilot’s license many years ago. In fact, my first plane ride ever was with Joe when I was about 15 years old. But about a week ago, something went terribly wrong. Emily was flying the plane that went down around Anniston, Alabama. When I saw Joe and Leeta at the funeral on Wednesday, Joe put his arms around me and with tears in his eyes said, “Go home and hug your family. You just never know.” I thought about James 4:17: “You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” Joe and Leeta’s address is 194 Olmstead Road, Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, 35763. Would you do me a favor? When you send out your Christmas cards, send them one. Tell them you’re praying for them. My one Christmas card was a sympathy card this year. Keith Parker Hendersonville, TN

Anniversary
In honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Paul and Lyndia Pike, your presence is requested for the renewal of their wedding vows in the church auditorium on Saturday, December 29, at 4 pm. A reception will follow in the Tea Room. No gifts please.

Ministry Updates
Caring Hearts (medical equipment loan ministry) continues to provide many medical items to those both within and outside our church family. From walkers to lift chairs, from shower stools to wheelchairs, over 100 items have been provided to those in need. Any questions, requests, or equipment donations need to be made to David Draper. CAFÉ Luncheons continue to provide meals each Sunday after services to our visitors and newer members. This is a wonderful way to get to know others here. At present we have enough volunteers so that each three family group only has to fix this meal twice each year. It would be awesome to have enough families volunteer that you only provide this meal once each year. Why not be one of those families? Contact the office. Community Hearts (Saturday night dinner) has been able to present checks for $1200 to both Brown Elementary and Walton Ferry Elementary. We are making a wonderful connection in the community with this ministry and helping our kids in the process. If you would like to help in this ministry, contact David Swanger. Caring Cards meets every first Sunday of the month from 4-6 pm in the Community Room and has mailed out hundreds of cards to those in need of encouragement. David Swanger

Challenge for 2008
As 2007 is coming to a close, it is that time of year to start thinking about what we want to do to please God, reach out to others, and what we should strive to achieve in our lives and for our families next year. We can give at no expense: free gifts of joy, attention, patience, trust, and encouragement to not only our children and grandchildren, but to our friends and loved ones. Several good ideas and recommendations came out of our November 18 Focus Group meeting with you, which we plan to implement and inform you about once we have formulated the group’s input into a complete plan of action in January. One of your recommendations we heard consistently was daily Bible reading. The elders felt this was a very worthy activity, and it has been several years since most of us have made this type of commitment. Several of you already can say that you have read the whole Bible, and some have done it several times. If you have never read the whole Bible through, wouldn’t you like to be able to say that in your lifetime at least once you accomplished this goal? So we challenge the congregation to commit to this, beginning January 1. We will secure enough One Year Bibles and have them ready by the end of this year. We hope and pray that many, if not all of us, will want to commit to this for 2008 to not only honor God, but also to increase our understanding and be examples for our families. You will develop a better understanding of the order of Biblical events and the historical context in which they unfold. The One Year Chronological Bible arranges the entire Bible text - books, chapters, and even verses - in the order the events actually happened, providing a more systematic reading. It has 365 daily readings to help you read the entire Bible in one year. Encourage your whole family to participate. The retail price for this NIV Bible is $19.99; however, with a volume discount, the actual cost to the church is $12 each. We ask that you reimburse this amount to the church or share in the cost to the extent you desire. Of course, if it is not convenient for you to contribute, please accept one as a free gift so we all may participate and benefit in this challenging and rewarding resolution next year. If you have a special need or request, attend our prayer session each Sunday morning at 8:45 in the library, just before 9 am Sunday Bible classes. The Elders
