Against: Students on why they hate Valentine’s Day
“I hate it because not everyone is in love and everyone who isn’t in love has to suffer. Every time I have a boyfriend, they find a way to dump me before Valentine’s Day so they don’t have to buy me anything.”
-Amanda Woodrow, Freshman in College of Liberal Arts

“It’s a sorry excuse to waste money that you don’t have on someone that you probably don’t love just so they can dump you a few months later, right around the time you begin to get attached. So now you are worse off than before, not to mention more broke. Sorry excuse for a holiday.”
-Laura Yakubec, Senior in College of Health Sciences

It’s that time of year again when guys will run out to the flower shop and girls will spend hours at the Hallmark store trying to pick the “perfect” card. Couples will fill restaurants, enjoying romantic dinners and priding themselves on “having someone.” On the other hand, there will be those renting horror flicks and hiding in their room until this day has passed, arguing that Valentine’s Day has been hijacked by card companies such as Hallmark with the intention of making millions. This year, we asked several Purdue students what they thought about this controversial day and why they either liked or hated it. Several of them were not reluctant to share their antiValentine sentiments. “This year, I’m going to have to say I hate (Valentine’s Day),” said Kaysha Shams, a junior in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences. “Why, it’s simple really. I think that everything about V-day sucks if you are single and if you have a boyfriend that sucks. It gives all women a reason to feel sorry for themselves if they’re single and get pissed off at their boyfriend if they forget.” Shams is not the only one that feels this way. Several other students agreed that, in general, going solo on Valentine’s Day serves to prime their worst memories and their worst insecurities, inciting rebellion upon the sight of each candy heart and each heart-shaped balloon. “It costs me money every year, but there is nothing wrong with that. I’ve recovered from Christmas, so I can’t complain. I think it’s more for the females than the males.”

-Chase Welsh, Sophomore in College of Health Sciences

“There is nothing wrong with it. I just have to buy stuff, so that sucks. It isn’t too bad.”

“Last year I was at work and when I came out, my exboyfriend had put stuffed animals in my car and wrote ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ on the window.”

-Matt Wilson, Junior in the School of Civil Engineering

-Lisa Daugird, Freshman in the College of Engineering

Everyone loves Valentine’s Day. Well, most people love it. A select number of people love Valentine’s Day. Some think a correlation exists between having a significant other and the level of enjoyment of Valentine’s Day, and Karen True agrees. True, a junior in the School of Agriculture, is celebrating her first Valentine’s Day married and said it’s a lot better having someone to love. “You either see people happy or sad. If you don’t have any love, it can be a real drag,” she said. True sees the holiday as a day out of the year to take time out to do something out of the ordinary and show someone you care. “It’s neat to have a day set aside to show someone they’re special.” Valentine’s Day is a little extra special to True because it is her six-month wedding anniversary. She doesn’t know what her husband has planned, but she is looking forward to it, she said. Karen Halliday’s boyfriend is away for Valentine’s Day this year, but that’s alright, said the sophomore in the College of Nursing. Halliday likes eating candy and going out to eat on Valentine’s Day, but she also likes the holiday for deeper reasons. “It gives a chance to step back and really say, ‘I love you,’” she said. Halliday also likes Valentine’s Day because of the single rose her boyfriend has given her for the past few years. “I dry them out and save the petals as memories,” she said. “I have three years of petals saved.”
