Preparing a Tentative Schedule The student and the clinical unit jointly determine the internship schedule for the semester. The days, hours, and times of the internship may be flexible, utilizing any shift or day, including holidays, providing there is appropriate supervision available. No internship time may conflict with the student’s regularly scheduled college courses or clinical hours. A student may not be absent from college courses or clinical to participate in internship hours. Additionally, do not schedule times that require the student to work a night internship shift prior to morning classes or clinical time. Patient Care Management/ Practicum clinical hours and internship hours are not interchangeable. All internship schedules must be approved by the assigned faculty member prior to beginning the internship program. Any schedule changes must be communicated to the assigned faculty member 24˚ in advance. Preceptor's name must accompany the student schedule. Customized Learning Plan A customized learning plan (CLP) utilizing the proper format, will be submitted by the student to the assigned faculty for approval prior to the start of the internship program. The plan includes both the student’s one and five year educational/employment/career goals, and the student’s learning objectives for the internship. These objectives will help to individualize each student’s experience. The customized learning plan will be used to help evaluate the student. To develop appropriate learning objectives, the student will:
● ● ● ●

Expand knowledge of policies and procedures that guide nursing care at the clinical facility. Implement a personal plan of nursing assessment based on the results of the NCLEX simulation test. Practice and review therapeutic communication techniques with clients.

At the end of the internship, the clinical preceptor will evaluate the student’s achievement of major learning outcomes and technical skills/professionalism. This completed evaluation must be turned in to the assigned faculty member with the final internship report, and record of attendance. Weekly E-mail The internship candidate is required to send the designated faculty member weekly e-mails that reflect an overview of the experience. Activity Logs Three activity logs are required during the semester. The due dates of the logs are determined by the number of hours completed and must be submitted within two days of the completion of the specified hours. Failure to submit logs in a punctual manner will result in a deduction of five points from the log grades for each log turned in late. Each log is to be emailed to the assigned faculty member utilizing the correct form (see appendix). The completed logs will be used as a part of the evaluation of the student. Thank You Letter Within one week of the completion of internship hours, each student will compose a thank you letter to the unit manager and preceptor thanking them for the opportunity. A copy of the letter should be emailed to the clinical site’s internship coordinator and the student’s assigned faculty member. Clinical Site Internship Coordinator Health Central ORHS Florida Hospital Norma Little, normal@health-central.org Angie Laxton, alaxton@ORHS.org laurabartel@flhosp.org The Final Internship Report The final report summarizes to what extent the student has accomplished the objectives. The report is due after the student completes all internship hours and prior to the start of final exam week for the semester as per the college calendar. One point per day will be deducted from the final report grade for late submissions through final exam week. If no final report is submitted by the last day of the semester, the student will receive an “F” for the internship.

Student interns do not require a Florida Nursing License as the internship is a college course and are following all the Nursing Program policies and procedures. If a student works beyond the maximum hours, the student is working as an unlicensed nurse and is subject to severe penalties from the Florida Department of Health. Each student enrolled in Valencia Community College’s health program has liability insurance. The college also provides insurance that covers the student in case of injury or accident while in the clinical component of the course. For this insurance to be effective, all internship time must be scheduled in advance.
