Hello to Everyone
It has been some months now since our last Newsletter, so can I take the opportunity to welcome all our new parents and children who have started at Winterslow School in the meantime. For the benefit of those who are unaware, the Role of the Friends is to support and help the school to provide a better learning environment for our children. Through fundraising we are able to provide those extra items of equipment that perhaps might not be provided otherwise. Our success in achieving this is due to the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm of our committee. Committee Members At our AGM in October, we said goodbye to Nick Macready and welcomed Ruth, Anna and Lydia to the Committee. Sarah Wooden remains as Chair, but Linda Cantelo has taken over as Treasurer and Sarah Day as Secretary. A list of current members can be found on the back of this newsletter and on the FOWS notice board in the Junior playground. Feel free to speak to any of us with any questions or ideas. Ongoing Fundraising Thank you to everyone who has supported our fundraising events over the year by donating items/cakes, attending or helping out. As a result the FOWS have been able to purchase library books and shelving, KS1 role play equipment, benches for the playgrounds, membership to the Scrap Store which provides craft resources, and Christmas tree decorations. Cake Sales Our cake sales have been very popular and we will continue to run them on a monthly basis. The next two are planned for Friday 30 Jan and Friday 27 Feb 2.30-3.30pm. Profits from each sale will go to the class that has donated the cakes for that month. 200 Club If you haven’t already joined the FOWS mini lottery or you want to check if your subs are up to date, you can do so by contacting Trish Williams (862911). For £1 per month your number will then be entered into a monthly draw with six prizes of either £10 or £20. Orienteering Event In October, we held an Introduction to Orienteering Event in Bentley Wood. Despite a wet day, we were delighted that over 170 people attended. On completing one or more of the three courses, all were rewarded with drinks and hot dogs. The event raised around £100. Big thanks go to the Trustees of Bentley Wood for allowing the event to take place and to Sarum Orienteers for both their help on the day and in advance. For anyone interested in joining any of their other local events, see their website Xmas Disco The Xmas Jingles Disco run by the FOWS in December was well attended and raised over £250. Children came dressed as their favourite character from a Christmas song. There were some great outfits, cool dance moves and lots of candy floss. Thanks go to Central Stores and to Sugar and Spice for their support for this event. FOWS also held a competition for the best decorated baubles. It generated lots of excellent art work and helped raise more funds in the process. Calendars FOWS has produced and sold a 2009 Calendar complete with self portraits of children and staff. A limited number of copies are still available – now at the reduced price of £1. Contact Mary (862641) or the School Office if you would like one. Valentine’s Disco On Friday 13 Feb we will be running a joint Valentine’s Disco with the Winterslow Scout Group. Open to under 12s, it will take place between 6-8pm at the Village Hall. Entrance (payable on the door) will be £2.50 per child to include crafts, games and dancing. Mexican Night Following our popular Curry Night last year, we will be holding a Mexican Night on Sat 16 May. Further details to follow in March, but the event will include salsa dancing workshops and Mexican food. Summer Fair Our biggest fundraising event of the year will take place on Saturday 20 June and this year’s theme is Africa. Drumming sessions will feature during the Fair and due to FOWS funding all the children will get an opportunity to attend a drumming workshop at School in early June. We can never have enough helpers for the Summer Fair, so whether you can help for a couple of hours on the day or have more time to offer in the planning stages, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Carolyn (863302) or Jo (863379). Phoenix Cards A big thank you goes to Sarah Byerley, who continues to support the FOWS by selling cards, wrapping paper etc. All profits go to the FOWS so please buy your supplies from her. Book-bag Quiz The quiz run previously proved to be very popular therefore we have decided to run one again. A new quiz is attached to this newsletter. Entry is £2 (all profits to the FOWS). Please return the completed quiz and money in an envelope to the school office by 27 Feb. The winner will receive a chocolate and wine hamper.
